CachyOS founder explains why they didn't join the new Open Gaming Collective (OGC)

But for a more serious (production) or install-it-and-forget-it type scenarios though, I'd recommend a lightweight immutable and atomic distro, such as uCore OS - because Arch/Cachy ocassionally breaks or needs manual intervention, and that might not be acceptable for some server scenarios.

Quoting: fenglengshunI've been running a Cachyfied-Arch on a homelab mini PC for over two years and it's been amazing. The performance is incomparable to any other traditional server distro that most people normally recommend, plus the added benefit and flexibility of being able to easily install the latest version of pretty much any Linux package, makes me happy to recommend Arch/Cachy for any experienced Linux folks looking to use it as a sever OS.Quoting: DirgeI know a lot of people use the distro as a NAS OS due to their ZFS implementation. I'm interested in seeing what they implement in order to break out and into more broad environments.Same. I prefer having the same distro on my machines, and so far I'm liking CachyOS. I'd want to see what the server edition offers and see it tested before using it on my repurposed old laptop.

Anti-cheat will still be one of the biggest problems for the new Steam Machine

and at the same time, there's also reports of false positives and people getting banned for no fault of theirs, due to Vanguard: https://youtube.com/watch?v=t8P0KvWzRMQ&lc=UgyEurMFFGhLHjlCDv14AaABAg&si=XAj6ZpUT3x2bhJaq [External Link]
There's also several reports of Vanguard crashing PCs:

To make things worse Vanguard runs all the time in the background even when you're not playing a game that needs it: https://www.reddit.com/r/pcgaming/comments/g02ggb/valorant_anticheat_starts_upon_computer_boot_and/ [External Link]
And even causes FPS drops in games that don't even use Vanguard!

And finally as someone else mentioned here, you can still cheat anyways by streaming the video to a remote device and using image recognition and input emulation.
So all that these anticheat systems are doing is offering a false sense of security, while severely compromising your system integrity and banning (some) legitimate players.
Anticheat is not just a Linux problem, it's a Windows problem as well - and the best we can do is boycott companies that rely on shitty client-side anticheats like Vanguard.

I see both sides of this argument. I get that kernel access anti-cheat is a serious "trust me, bro" situation. I also play both Counter-Strike 2, and Valorant regularly. One of those games is flooded with cheaters, and the other has basically none.Interesting you say that Valorant doesn't have cheaters, because I've come across many reports that say otherwise.

In fact many other anticheat systems also work on Proton, such as BattlEye, nProtect Gameguard, VAC etc. Sure, they may not work at the kernel level and offer the same level of "protection" as on Windows, but the options are there. It's up to the studios/developers to enable support or switch to a compatible anticheat - if they care about Linux.

I think it's fairly likely what will happen in the next 2-3 years is they'll make EAC work on Steam OS@mattaraxia EAC already works on SteamOS (Proton). For instance, I play Fall Guys online (which uses EAC) and it works just fine. There's a whole bunch of other EAC games which work fine too from what I've heard, such as Brawlhalla, Sea of Thieves, Dead by Daylight etc.

Linux gamers on Steam finally cross over the 3% mark

With the Windows 10 EoL and the flood of newbie users switching to Linux, it's only logical to assume users would prefer to go for a reliable, newbie-friendly distro like Bazzite, instead of Arch and CachyOS which are catered to the more tech-savvy/geeky users. So it's surprising to see Arch and CachyOS report higher figures than Bazzite.

I'm using Steam and I'm using my (Linux) PC for many other things, and I bet that's the case for most of us. So yes, I think their point is valid. No it's not, because Bazzite is far more newbie friendly than Arch/CachyOS, and can be used for pretty much everything besides gaming (unless you're into running custom kernels and messing around the system internals, but those would be niche use cases). In fact I've got Bazzite installed on my WFH/productivity laptop not for gaming but exactly because it gets out of the way and it "just works". What I want first and foremost from a productivity machine, is something that I can count on to always work, and that's why I chose an immutable distro like Bazzite.

From what I gathered Bazzite is a very specific distro, it's not general purpose. So I'm not surprised it's more niche than general purpose Arch.@Shmerl: I think you missed the bit where this was a Steam survey - and Steam is primarily used by gamers, so unfortunately your argument isn't relevant here.
Not everyone uses computers only for gaming, I'd imagine majority actually uses them for everything, and gaming is just one use case among many.

I'm surprised CachyOS and even Arch(?!) actually scores higher than Bazzite! You'd think that Bazzite being more user-friendly would score higher... seems like Linux gamers are more tech-savvy than I thought!
GE-Proton 10-23 released with fixes for Killer Instinct, Heroes of Newerth Reborn and more

But you've got a point. Less than 24 hours after posting this, GE-Proton 10-24 is out.. Maybe you should have a policy to report only on feature releases, otherwise you'll have to post a new article every day...

Pretty much as is tradition at this point, a hotfix follows a release since GE-Proton has no quality assurance testing on itShots fired!

@vertigo which GPU and cable.? I'm on a 7800XT running CachyOS and Bazzite (both on KDE), using a DisplayPort 2.1 connected to an AOC monitor, and have zero issues with VRR.
@Lofty Bazzite and CachyOS are both good options. Expect CachyOS to get 6.5 soon (available already in the Arch testing repo if you want to try it now), Bazzite will be a bit later but still will get it sooner than most other distros. I'd recommend CachyOS only if you're a bit technical and don't mind ocassionally getting your hands dirty (aka using the terminal, maybe to fix something). Bazzite on the other hand is a great option if you want something that "just works™".
Avoid Ubuntu-based distros like the plague, they're always outdated and tend to break when you do upgrades.

@Caldathras I wouldn't call it a VM. Even the original DOSBox supported running Windows btw, and this was mainly possible because old versions of Windows were all based on DOS, so it's not much of a stretch to emulate the extra hardware bits needed to run Windows.
I also wouldn't call it a VM in the modern sense as you can't just boot any random x86 disk image (like how you can do so in VirtualBox), nor does it make use of any type 1 hypervisor acceleration (Hyper-V in Windows, KVM on Linux).

v20 is already out btw:
HOTFIX:
- removed unnecessary webview2 patch (fixes Forza Horizon 5 login never opening)
- added workaround to allow darkwinter software region version of Girls Frontline 2: Exilium to work
About webview2 patches:
Originally in wine 9 a stub was introduced which fixes/allows webview2 to install properly. This fixed webview2 installation for vermintide 2 as well as the Haoplay version of Girls Frontline 2: Exilium. Unfortunately the Haoplay version requires additional missing functionality in wine to work properly (it currently is still broken), so supplementary webview2 patches were added which were proposed to upstream wine for a merge request (separate from the original stub that was accepted). The additional patches were not accepted, and in addition, broke the login prompt for Forza Horizon 5. Additionally they did not help with getting the Haoplay version of Girls frontline 2: Exilium to work, therefore there is no point in keeping them.
As of now without the supplemental patches FH5 login and the Darkwinter Software version of Girls Frontline 2: Exilium are working. The difference between the Darkwinter Software version and the Haoplay version is only in region coverage. Darkwinter Software covers North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland, while Haoplay covers most European countries and the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan
