In somewhat simplified terms and glossing over a lot of details:

SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), you can display a pixel on a screen but not how bright that pixel should be. You could increase the RGB values to make it brighter, but you would be modifying the color. You could increase the monitor's brightness, but now you're making every pixel brighter.

HDR (High Dynamic Range), you can display a pixel on a screen and decide how bright it should be independent of the color. There's metadata the monitor can communicate with software to tell it how bright individual pixels can be.

My eye is drawn so hard to the grid pattern in the new version that I don't really notice whether the actual terrain looks cooler. Well, more than "don't notice", it's like the grid pattern is strong and thick enough that it overwhelms little details, making it actually kind of hard to tell that the terrain art is more fine-grained.

This is true to some extent, but people usually forget those in the army could still refuse to go to wars... or even better, decide to not join the army at all.

Well, Israel has universal conscription--everyone serves (well, except the ultra-orthodox). The United States, on the other hand, gave up on conscription after the prospective conscriptees got really upset and caused political problems back in the Vietnam era, and are now finding they don't have enough volunteers to really fill the numbers they want. So it seems most there are, indeed, deciding not to join the army at all.

So, what is the state of Mono? I remember back in the day it was all controversial and people thought it would never get close to parity with the stuff it was emulating and attempts to use it would mostly just make Linux look bad. But I get the impression that these days it's maybe pretty good?

I'd say the correct approach is to have separate configuration files for preferences (should be synchronized) and system settings (shouldn't be synchronized). Preferences are things like HUD configuration or gameplay options, while system settings are graphical, audio or input options.

While that sounds like a reasonable approach in outline, I can imagine wanting my HUD configuration to be different on different-sized (or different-shaped) screens.

There is after all this weird tendency where, if you're playing a game on two different devices (so the cloud syncing is relevant), they are often not the same device and so you may just, gasp! want different settings on them.

I can't imagine it running particularly well.

Come to that, from what I've heard it's generally hard to imagine an "ARK: Survival" game running particularly well, like, ever, on any machine.
