Competition is good, but so far i haven't seen a decent enough handheld that can compete. Not even the ROG ALLY is close even though it does beat the steam deck on screen, performance the rest is not as good.

So id say ignore the Youtube click bait about that latest super duper windows 10" Ryzen Z1 handheld that cost $1000 and just get a steam deck.

Funny how effective it is when you plan a whole device as a whole device, with what it's going to be used for in mind.

Well, I couldn't really tell you. But I will say this . . . a year or two ago when I got a new desktop computer I thought, "I'll just try Ubuntu on it. I mean, it's supposed to be user friendly too and all, why would there really be much difference between Ubuntu and Mint?"
And . . . there kind of was. It was just subtly more annoying, for me. I can't put my finger on it exactly, but I found myself with little things bugging me on Ubuntu, just occasional grumbles and curses and in-the-way feelings so that after a while I said screw this, wiped it and put in Mint. It wasn't nearly as bad as Windows, mind you.

and, its not like we those companies had any choice anyway, the open source engines sucked prior to godot, building your own engine is expensive and not everyone can afford (hell even the big studios are outsourcing it), engine migration isnt easy and even if some engine like godot is as good as unity, the ecosystem off add'ons for it is in its infancy, that coming from someone who use and love godot.

Yeah, I think maybe Unity really misjudged their timing on this revenue grab. They did it just as Godot was getting good enough and momentum-y enough that a push this size could really help Godot eat their lunch and get that ecosystem building at high speed.

Well, to be fair (even though I don't really want to be fair about this), if an awful lot of the outfits using Unity are doing free-to-play games, a percentage of game sales is going to get them exactly zero from those--which in turn would also mean that if they turn up the percentage high enough to break even, it's gonna have to be way higher than if those people were paying their share. So I can see them needing some way to extract dough from people who give away the base game for free and make their revenue from microtransactions (and I think we can all agree that someone ought to be taking those people's money).

This still seems like a stupid and really annoying way to go about it.
