Mojang say no to NFTs and blockchain with Minecraft

Quoting: Mojangblockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications [1] nor may they be utilized to create NFTs [0] associated with any in-game content

I'm going to disagree here, that's against:
0. Doing whatever I want to do with the software I run.
1. Changing that software to do what I want.

Note I'm not an NFT proponent, at all, but I still believe people should be free to do whatever they want with the software they run. (Of course Minecraft is not Free Software, but the world is not black & white and the more freedom we get as users the better IMO.)

I would prefer if that was a trademark thing instead: you do whatever modding you want with the game client and server, but if you want to mod for NFT support then forget about using our name and logo we do not want to be associated with it.

And shady stuff like Blockverse should be regulated by law, not by software EULAs.
Hmmm . . . where you get into problems with that is that Minecraft is generally not a solo thing, and the use of these NFTs is something that is almost by definition not done by yourself. Further, the use of NFTs in a community setting is almost solely for the purpose of walling off most community members from doing (whatever the NFT does)--the whole point of NFTs is that they are supposedly Non-Fungible, meaning they can be reserved for one person and taken away from everyone else.

Thus you could look at NFTs themselves as going against (0) and (1), and banning them contrariwise as supporting those ideas.

Tesla to demo Steam for more in-car gaming soon using Linux & Proton

To what I've heard, it's better than those "humans", though.
Oh, c'mon. Who'd let one of those behind the wheel of a car?

Well, it's nice that the premise is so far out. Some games have premises that are thinly disguised political takes on real events, but clearly not this one. Nope.

Quoting: TheRiddickMicrosoft has been trying very hard lately to prevent machines from installing Linux natively via hidden bios options that most normies would have no clue about or even risk touching no matter how much they wish to try or move to Linux.
I can attest to that. Got a laptop a month or two ago when my old one died. Had to do a surprising amount of fiddling and looking stuff up before I could disable the stupid bios stuff that was blocking my Linux install. And it wasn't just the UEFI stuff, it was some other dang thing.

Quoting: denyasisSo, I buy this car for me put steam on. I'm home playing a steam game. My spouse then takes my car to do an errand, it turns on, logs into my steam account ( kicking me at home off). So now I'm trying to call my spouse while they are running errands to go back to the car and close steam?

I can kinda see the criticisms that these innovations are all thought up of people that don't have to think about family life.
I thought Steam actually had some kind of family account thing.

Quoting: gradyvuckovicThe more companies invested in the success of Proton/Linux/Wayland/Vulkan/etc, the better.

The more places games could be played on Linux the better.

It all creates more incentive for game publishers to keep Linux support/Proton compatibility at the back of their minds while planning future game releases.
Yeah and in terms of sheer numbers . . . When Tesla's value started to soar, it was purely on spec, people's imagining of what it might become, irrational exuberance, almost getting to the point of "extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds". But the bet could pay off . . . Tesla sales keep nearly doubling every year and they're already at the point where even in terms of raw number of cars sold, they are not a small car company. If they can get their hands on enough battery materiel and keep doubling for a couple more years, they'll be a frigging huge car company.

So for instance (quickly googles), Tesla made 930,000 cars in 2021, and seems clear that 2022 will be bigger. So we're talking about, minimum, a million plus gaming rigs sold per year. Quite likely continuing to grow exponentially for a while, so in a couple years it'll be like 2 million per year. True, lots of these will not be used for gaming, but still, that's a number of units per year bigger than the current total number of Linux users on Steam. This is not a small deal.

Wine manager Bottles default runner now based on Valve's Wine fork and Proton

Quoting: itsNottingI can‘t get the EA App to install on Bottles (default config, Soda).

Watched the video on Bottles and that worked fine but in my case, the EA Client installer always failes with a red exclamation mark „send logs„ option available, but that is only for EA. No files added in the bottles folder/path.

Any ideas, suggestions? ;)
Avoid anything connected with EA?

Unity to 'merge' with ironSource with a buzzword salad press release

Quoting: ljrkWell, ironSource built an opensource (!) SDK for installers... this isn't malicious at all. Many viruses used installShield or WinZIP to extract, this doesn't make either technology especially evil.

Further, they don't support this product anymore.

However they *do* focus more on ads which I find problematic indeed.

Seems unity employees don't agree with you. Also, the most recent CEO of unity came from EA. Video does a great job laying out what is going on with Unity.
Interesting video. The guy is clearly not making an effort to be neutral or dispassionate, mind you, so while the side he's on is a side I instinctively inhabit, I still want to apply a grain or so of salt.

That said, there are some interesting bits of info and background. Not directly relevant to the merger is the fact that apparently CEO Riccitiello promised everyone that there would be no layoffs, just two weeks before the very recent layoffs of hundreds of employees, and then when queried about it the company released a statement that was not just uberbland HRspeak, but almost went out of its way to avoid acknowledging the idea that the employees involved were people rather than "resources". OK, separate decision, but I think it shows decisively that Riccitiello is a massive lying piece of shit who should not be given the benefit of the doubt about anything he does.

Another little side note about the layoffs--the year before, CEO Riccitiello got a raise of 160% to 22 million bucks a year. I make his raise around 13.5 million. What do you figure the average salary of the people laid off? How many of them would his raise have paid for?

Was that, by any chance, a reference to an old Monty Python sketch involving John Cleese dressed as a bank robber?
I am a Monty Python fan but sadly no, just the Bear Grylls meme.
Damn you, sir. I had never heard of Bear Grylls. Now I can't un-see some of the things I looked up.
