But you know, all you have to do is delete the relevant libs. Nobody's stopping you.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPI simply look beyond a few personal inconveniences at the bigger picture.Because . . . the libraries take up a few megs on your terabyte+ hard drive? Yeah, surely it's worth getting rid of some functionality to get that!!!
And the bigger picture is that progress requires sacrifice. Can't play some games/use some apps anymore? So be it, if that's the price to pay to finally get rid of old stuff like 32bit for good.

This is a time to celebrate the fact that Linux distros are not monopolies.

Quoting: einherjarThanks Canonical :><:No doubt we will. But they will be fools to do so. Look, Microsoft and Apple make stupid decisions all the time. When they do, just exactly what can you do about it? Can you switch to a different Windows or Mac OS distro?
Now we will have lots of game devs and publishers saying:
"See, there is no reliable Distro in the Linux world. It doesn't make sense to ship software for Linux"

Canonical are now saying Ubuntu's 32bit is not being entirely dropped, 32bit libraries will be "frozen"

I don't think anyone was aware they were planning this, which is a whole different ball game.

Quoting: GuestThey DID talk about it beforeI think everyone was under the impression that what they were talking about was no longer distributing the OS as 32-bit, as in you'd need a 64-bit machine to run Ubuntu going forward. That wouldn't be a huge deal and they wouldn't be the first distro to go that way. Sure, there are still a few 32-bit machines out there (up until very recently I had one of them), but they're either not being updated much or they belong to people using Slack or some damn thing (I was the former).

Quoting: GuestI do not see how they could backpedal without recanting totally and lose face.In my experience, when someone comes out and simply says "I was wrong about X, so I'm changing my mind and I'm sorry for any problems I caused" they don't lose face. People are if anything impressed. But at a minimum, they sure lose a lot less face than if they stonewall forever and pretend they're totally right when it's obvious they're both wrong and screwing people over. Canonical never seem to have figured this out.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleIf it's Japanese-y and cyberpunk-oriented, they may be Gals/Gyaru. There's a Japanese teenage girl style for tough/flashy girls which has proved surprisingly long lasting which involves dark makeup. The style probably is in part an inversion of more establishment Japanese beauty ideals of pale skin. Gal-style skin would be a natural for a Japanese cyberpunk setting.Quoting: PatolaI happen to like the skin tones and bright hair.Quoting: GuestArtwork looks ugly...Very ugly. In particular, their dark skin seems mismatched with their physical appearance, and the bright-colored hairs don't help too.

So like, just how many libraries are we talking about? And how much are they changing? How much maintenance does the capacity to run 32-bit applications require? It doesn't seem like it would be that huge a deal, in which case
1) They're dropping big functionality for small gain, which seems stupid, and
2) It will be easy for Ubuntu derivatives to just put the 32-bit libraries back.
But maybe it is a big deal. Maybe there's some huge amount of work involved in maintaining this stuff--or rather, in using the stuff Debian is already maintaining . . .
Could someone enlighten me on this?
