That's a lot of CVEs...Just imagine what's not been found yet. I'm not here to turn this into an X vs Wayland thing, but there's a reason why X is referred to as a walking corpse. There's nobody around to properly maintain it anymore, and all it ever sees are patches for independently discovered vulnerabilities like these. And the guy who wants to create its successor, LibreX or whatever, is a lunatic who feels it necessary to inject his ultra far-right beliefs into every tiny facet of his life. Even Linus has called him out for being a lunatic. It's time we let it die, and embrace the future. The same people were kicking and screaming when systemd replaced init.d and rc.local, and they're always going to be around to try to convince you that your best interest is to stay on antiquated systems all because they feel they're above learning something new.

Didn't they claim Linux support for that, way back during the initial crowdfunding?I wouldn't know, but we certainly don't have it now. I'm not necessarily a fan of it. I just have friends that got me an introductory ship so I could fly around in the ones they dump money on.
Steam Beta improves controller support for 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless, 8BitDo Pro 2 and more

Also, does anyone know if this finally fixes the face button layout detection for those with the Nintendo layout? Steam used to automatically map things as expected so long as I had the "Use Nintendo layout" option toggled. Games no longer seem to respect this, though, and I have to make a Steam Input profile for practically everything. This might be a Wayland thing, but I don't remember experiencing this until Steam got updated one night some time last year.

For the Ultimate 2 it actually does work over the dongle but it's kinda hidden. Their newest dongle beta firmware allows D-Input over it now. Hold Home+B when turning it on and it'll work on steam input like over Bluetooth.Nice! Does this mean gyro controls work over 2.4g, as well? Now if I can just get VirtualBox to cooperate. I might have to move to a different VM solution. I used to update my Ultimate using Vbox with no problems, but the Ultimate 2 dongle doesn't properly reconnect when put in flashing mode. Same goes for the controller itself.

Say what you will about Star Citizen, it's really amusing how much work goes into getting it running on Linux. It's probably the most documented non-Steam Windows game when it comes to set up instructions and troubleshooting. Considering the state it's in, I just find it funny that people would dedicate so much time to it, but it also makes me happy that they do.

I guess I understand why the devs have done this, but I really wish they didn't disable game compatibility that was once available behind the experimental toggle. Before they disabled Skyrim detection, I used this to mod SE without any problems, but it's no longer possible to do this with later releases. I feel that it kinda defeats the purpose to have an option to enable experimental features if they get taken away with the intention to add them back later. That all being said, it's very possible it had problems with certain mods. I installed around 30 of the most popular ones, but Skyrim has an obscene amount of mods, and it stands to reason that something was breaking.

The hacker in me says "how hard is to fake a whitelisted device to the routine asking for it?".It'd be really amusing if the SteamDeck=1 flag is all that's needed. This is what's required for EAC to work under Space Marine 2, so it's not that far fetched.

The question is, does it properly understand the concept of Wine like e.g. Heroic does? Can we use it as a native Linux app to handle Windows games in multiple Wine prefixes? Like it or not, that's the status quo for gaming on Linux nowadays. I have no use for it if it must be run inside each separate Wine prefix as a Windows app. It's a native application, hence the "cross-platform" label. It works by scanning your Steam directory for prefixes belonging to supported games, and it adds them to a library within the app itself. I used it to mod Skyrim SE before they temporarily disabled support for it, and it worked perfectly fine. Also, if you don't want to use this, LIMO exists as an alternative.

There is a zero chance I will install windows to update firmware on anything, fwdupd or GTFO.You can always use Virtualbox with a USB pass-through. I have a Tiny11 VM specifically for firmware updaters. Haven't had an issue with it yet.

Quoting: user1These seem like isolated issues. Like, I've been running Steam on Linux for nearly 7 years now, and haven't once seen any of this, or reports of this, until now. Save for the context menu thing, but I've only seen that reported for custom themes, and it's due to the new JS engine Steam uses being resource hungry. Are you running on hardware that's older than a decade or something? Because that would explain a lot of the things you described. Also, if you have your games installed to the same drive as the OS, and you have Steam configured to precache shaders, that might be why it's so slow to start. It totally chokes the system with high I/O on start when it runs through the shaders, and performs updates. Move your games to a different drive, and this problem usually goes away.Quoting: robvvand the only issue I've had is with GPU accelerated rendering, which seems to be a bit unstable. This is a gross understatement. In my experience, Steam is literally the only app on Linux that may cause a total desktop freeze (no matter on which DE, X.org or Wayland) after which I can do nothing but hard reboot my PC. The only workaround to it is disabling hardware acceleration in Steam.
Also, how about the fact that Steam context menu contents are 95% of the time unclickable. This is an issue since the big ui redesign update and it still hasn't been fixed after more than a year or two. You have to click sometimes dozens of times until game properties finally opens for example.
Oh, and also how Steam was already slow to launch on Linux and since the big ui update it's even slower. And many more annoyances..
I mean don't get me wrong, I have endless grattitude towards Valve for everything they've put into Linux, but you honestly have to admit that when it comes to the Steam client itself on Linux, it's a POS and the forever unfixed issues with it makes them look lazy.

Quoting: neolithThere's quite a few indies that still allow self-hosting. They're mostly MMOs and survival games, but that's kind of how it's always been. My friends and I run servers for Abiotic Factor, Enshrouded, Palworld, Valheim, and we're thinking of kicking a Path of Titans server. We hate playing on pubs, and if a game offers a server, we try to opt for that.Quoting: mZSq7Fq3qsI miss the times when allmost all games had their own dedicaded servers available and you could just host your own server.Good god, yes! I am SO annoyed by the fact that community maintained servers are going the way of the dodo...
