For me, DOTT was the best. If I recall correctly, it took me a couple of weeks to finish it. (That was before one could simply download a walkthrough). If found that nowadays I don't have the patience anymore for those games. But on the other hand, the puzzles were funny and clever. Maybe it's not me, maybe it's the games. :-)

Valve Plans A Big Steam Machine Presence At GDC 2015

Quoting: GuestBtw lots of options is a good thing not a bad thing. What is good for me may not be good for you. If you want to be restricted then you are totally missing the point.
No, most people don't like to have many options. From a marketing point of view, you want to avoid that, read e.g.:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/27/your-money/27shortcuts.html [External Link]

Having lots of possible configurations makes it also more difficult to support them. You need more testing time and you will get more support calls (I have no sound -> Oh, that's bad, we didn't test *that* soundcard)

Why do you think people buy consoles and not PCs? They want it simple. They just want a box to play games and maybe watch movies. It's crappy slow, with bad resolution? Who cares? Consoles are sold in the millions.

Why do you think Apple is so successful? Because most people hate options.

Sure, Android is successful too, but SteamOS/SteamMachines can walk the middle ground somewhat. If you want to simply have a computer/console that works: Buy a Steam Machine and you are golden. If you want options, buy a PC and do whatever you want. Call that one "Steam powered" and you have a nice "second brand".

Steam Workshop, Family Sharing and the other stuff you mentioned make Steam outstanding, but they are already available, nobody will buy a Steam Machine to get them. The controller will be available too without Steam Machine. Maybe they could launch it as a bundle first and sell the controller separately only later, but I doubt that.

Oh, I am excited. Not because I want to buy one, but I think that it will require a "killer feature". I mean, I think there are some important things required for Steam Machines to become a success/compete with Windows:

- Staying with One Design
When first Steam Machines prototypes were shown at CES, all were different. Some cool, some not so much. But I think it is important that you have a branding and know at once that it is a Steam Machine

- "Standard" options: Casual, Medium, Powergamer, Custom: Average people don't want lots of options. They want to decide how much they spend and get a good computer for the price

Of course, the controller is important too, but basically a Steam Machine needs to be "just as good" as PS 4 or Xbone in that regard. I don't think it is that important (of course, it mustn't suck)

But basically, I do not care about these things since I don't plan to buy one.

But I think there is one more requirement:

- "A "killer feature": Valve really needs to push the Steam Machines with some kind of killer feature. Don't know, but something like: Use SteamOS and you get HL 3 for free. Something like that. A real hammer. Something that will move lots of gamers from Windows to SteamOS.

And that makes it an exciting thing.

Unepic, A Highly Rated 2D RPG Platformer Looks To Be Out For Linux

It's a really cool game. Funny twists, challenging levels.
I really enjoyed playing it. Alas, on Windows. I would love for this to count it for Linux!

But the port took an awful long time and it wasn't even playable in Wine (at least one or two years ago)

GOL Cast: Dangerous Card Games In Hand Of Fate
13 Oct 2014 at 7:01 pm UTC

Played a couple of games (with keyboard, no controller) and I got kinda stuck (ok, tried it three times) now at King of Dust(?, that spellcasting/boulderthrowing guy). Not sure why, but in the earlier fights I rolled around and whacked them a while and then they started slowly to drop. Not in this fight. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

Indeed, potentially nice game

Things I don't like:
- Not sure what sense it makes to do deckbuilding. It's kinda just "Hm, lets put the least annoying cards in the deck"-game.
- Reading card descriptions is tedious at best. The need to switch to an inspect mode is annoying and to be honest: A casual gamer like me can't remember what a card does.
- Whole user interface could use some polishing

About the Wine question:
It's an interesting snapshot, maybe you should also ask if this behaviour has changed in the last couple of months/years. For me it has! While I would have answered "Nearly all games through Wine" a couple of years ago, I would answer "I don't use Wine for gaming" currently.

My Wine usage has gradually declined with the number of games available.

Blackwell Games Make Their Debut On Linux In Humble Bundle: PC And Android 11

I started yesterday with Blackwell 1 and so far it seems to be a very interesting game. The graphics are a bit dated, but the story seems to be intriguing. Can't wait to find out what's the deal with the "mad aunt". :) The user interface on phone is good too, if you hold the finger down on the screen, it shows all the clickable hotspots. I always hated it when I had to find "one pixel" clicks in such games.

Loved it! Really awesome game, the graphics were stellar.
Have it on Android, but I hate the controls. It's simply not convenient to play with a small touchscreen. (For me, at least)

Lutris Open Gaming Platform New Release

Quoting: XodetaetlOH by the way, there is a recent bug on Steam that affect us: if Steam isn't started, launching a game from Lutris will start Steam but you have to double-click it a second time for it to finally launch.
I have chosen /usr/games/steam as runtime and it seems, I don't have that problem. A configured game launches at once.

Hmm, maybe you could just simply do a "which steam" in Linux?

About the path:
In my installation there's a file config.vdf in ~/.steam/config that contains the path:
"BaseInstallFolder_1" "/Data/SteamLibrary"

Not sure if that's always the case, but I guess you could parse the Library folder from there.

@Kossak:
If you only use Steam, well, than this tool doesn't help you that much. But if you install stuff from Humble Bundle or from elsewhere, it is useful.

Lutris Open Gaming Platform New Release

@Xodetaetl:
Well, if you hadn't mentioned "'ll try and make installers for all Linux Steam games this week" I would probably made and uploaded one or two. But since I doubt that you create hundreds of them "by hand", I guess it won't help you :)

I think for widespread use you need to do a lot of autodetect stuff, people are lazy. :)

Btw.: It doesn't autodetect my steam installation. Hmm, don't know Python but I looked into steam.py and don't understand how you detect it. Since it probably should, if you have any questions, please ...

I just noticed: steam_data_dir tests 4 folders.
Alas, my Steam Library ist /Data/SteamLibrary/ and there are no games in the "usual" folders. Maybe this causes problems?

Another thing:
Maybe it would be a good idea to add some help pages or a forum?
Some pages with quite common usecases like:
"How to add my steam games"
"How to add my Humble Bundle(s)"
"How to add ..."
A couple of screenshots are probably enough, just to get people started.

Or is there a forum, where people can ask questions.

Another thing: Any plans to add a PPA? I am a sucker for automatic updates, you know ;)
