Looks Like Feral Interactive's Linux Ports Will See More AMD Love

This crowd right here on GOL doesn't really seem like the childish fanboys you describe, and not even very tolerant towards such behaviour. I'm sure most of us will be happy to see AMD competitive again on Linux when the time comes. I know I'd love to have an actual choice when buying a GPU for Linux gaming.
Oh, but I was not talking solely about the GOL-crowd, but in more general terms. Sorry if it sounded differently ;)

I even brought the Windows-example where to date many people have a very bad attitude towards AMD for no reason whatsoever.

On windows my 6950 can compete against any nvidia card in the same generation, apart from proprietary technology such as physx etc.

So far I didn't have any problems with Feral ports aside from Shadow of Mordor which I simply didn't buy/support.

I always use the AMD open source drivers as binary blobs can go phuck themselves :) (no time for all the problems that come with them in my daily life)

Actually AMD is working on many problems, it's just that their strategy is more mid and long-term.

I'm curious how long it will take for the rumors to disappear though. When I bought an AMD-GPU quite a few years back, after I had a NVIDIA one everybody was like "You use AMD? Are you stupid? Their drivers just suck"... that was on Windows back then and it was utter bullshit. I never had a single problem that could be pinned down to drivers.

Of course I couldn't see all the proprietary nvidia-stuff such as physx in Borderlands 2 etc. but as I didn't care for proprietary technology even when I used Windows I couldn't care less.

So, I'm really, really curious how long it will take after the drivers are on par for the crowd to stop spreading nonsense. I guess it will be a few years at least.

Reminds me of Watch Dogs. I'll wait and see and hope that I am wrong and the AI is going to be awesome. Else, no money from my side.
Besides F.E.A.R, what other FPS game has good AI? Because it certainly doesn't look worse than other FPS when it comes to AI.
Far Cry had awesome AI back in 2004. But ya, I do not support these other games either ;) So just because they also have a shitty AI I won't buy Homefront (for full price that is)

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Released For Linux, We Love You Feral Interactive

Quoting: mr-eggWhich is why we need Vulcan and continual improvements to the display server. Linux seems to be anything from 5% to 25% behind on a really good port and that’s on Nvidia which has the 100% binary of windows driver .. AMD, just forget it. Luckily most people still play at 1080p and modern GPU's have that overhead to spare, lower end Steam machines wont.

Its OpenGL it basically sucks unless your REALLY pro at working around the issues and have a deep understanding of it, many Devs don’t have the time or expertise nor should they, Vulcans simplicity should fix the issues (if it ever gets off the ground )

I mean, Vulcan seems pretty key to SteamOS/Linux success right now and the tumble weeds are starting to roll..
Na, not really... OpenGL is just different than Direct3D and many developers and many engines have been Direct3D only for a long time. OpenGL doesn't have convenience methods like Direct3D does. Direct3D is more focused on creating games and generally getting stuff done, without any optimization that you can do manually. You have your predefined methods and that's that.

Also, do not forget that OpenGL is just Graphics, while DirectX (notice, not 3D but X) gives you support for Audio, Controllers and other stuff, so it's much more convenient.

Another point is that OpenGL often was crippled on Windows and the gpu-drivers and other reasons never made it very appealing to develop for Linux. MacOS wasn't interesting enough as well.

So, while I agree that OpenGL could use some convinient functions I'm not sure that's the way Vulkan will go. After all Vulkan (as DirectX 12) is meant to give you even more control over your GPU, meaning it's more low-level.

The game uses OpenGL 4.3+ as a minimum to render correctly. This rules out open source drivers for any card until support is completed.

If you use the latest closed source AMD drivers released just a few weeks ago you should be able to play but not at a standard where we felt official support was possible.

As we said on Twitter we're working with AMD in regards to AMD card support.
Thank you very much for taking your time and answering! Sadly the proprietary drivers are not an option for me, so I'll wait and play this pearl in a few months/years.

I've been very content with your ports in the past and I guess I will be in the future!

That is not the question I asked. AMD Cards are not supported on quite a few games and the open source drivers-support is even worse.

Maybe someone can or will try it out and I'd appreciate some feedback :)

Devs only ever mention the proprietary drivers. They never mention nouveau either and even if the open source nvidia driver's performance would be better I doubt they would recommend or test on it! Hence I ask.

if not, I'll pass until sometime in the future. I actually hoped that the postponing of the release was due to making sure it would run on other vendors than nvidia as well.

But alas, again not supported. Not sure if I want to support this time. I mean, for Borderlands TPS I did and was not disappointed but I'm not sure which OpenGL version SoM needs.

SteamOS/Linux Version Of Gauntlet Cancelled

Inoki, you must have a serious, unfortunate problem with your hardware. I'm running L4D2 on my HD6950 from 2010/2011 and it runs far better on Linux with the open source drivers (!) than it does on windows. Not that it really matters, for in Windows I have 120-150fps and in Linux I have >180-200.

Also, your problem with LibreOffice does sound really strange. I mean, Ubuntu is a very, very broad distribution, many people use it and I've not heard of this being a big problem.

But alas, I'm not using Ubuntu since 2011, so maybe I've missed something.

I'm not saying you're a paid troll or anything the like, just that you're really unfortunate and that problems like that could happen on Windows too and that they probably happen much more often there, because of the shear number of users.
