Valve Rep Confirms Why Some Games Have Their SteamOS Icon Removed
18 Oct 2015 at 8:23 am UTC Likes: 7

How is that - in any way - making things clearer? Many games obviously ran on good on Linux, some even great. Now they removed an icon because it has additional dependencies?

Guess what, a Java game (for example) has an additional dependency on Windows as well, namely Java.

So how does removing the icon help anybody? New customers will think that a game is only supported on Windows (or Windows and MacOS for that matter), while it is perfectly runnable natively under Linux...

How can one defend that stupid practice? It's like starting to act before you even thought about what you want to achieve.

They should have - from the very beginning - added a Linux and a SteamOS icon separately. Because, let's face it: Even though there are exceptions, most people that use Linux, know what they are doing, at least in non-developing countries where money is not a problem and every PC comes with a Windows-license anyway.

So, apart from the console-people that are used to things just working out of the box, a user on a desktop will be able to work around dependencies... doesn't matter if that's on Windows or Linux, or any other OS.

Of course, one difference is, that on Windows you could just tell the .exe that it needs to install that dependency, without having admin-rights or so... but that's the only difference I can think of spontaneously.

What I see by this attitude... if a game has a launcher (or any other "dependency" for that matter), on all platforms, why would they need to work around this to get a "Linux" (desktop, mind!) icon?

That way it just looks like many games are not available for Linux, although they are. This will cut share on sales even more -.- As if 1% was way too much -.-

Whenever I read any statement where people are clearly confusing Windows with a PC I feel this strange urge to scream:

Bring this to my linux-powered-toaster!

I mean, if only a PC with Windows is a PC I figure I may as well call my desktop machine toaster...

Idiocracy truly is on it's way when even the more intelligent people are getting dumber by the minute...

Magicka 2 Looks Like It Will Have Lower Performance On AMD Cards

Quoting: liamdaweAs for marketshare stuff, developers go for Nvidia first on Windows just as much as they do on Linux.
Interestingly this is not true. There were and are some games supported by AMD (which is - like the games sponsored by nvidia "the way they are meant to be played" - absolute bullshit), but I've yet to see *any* game that doesn't run on AMD on Windows.

One thing tho: Of course proprietary nonsense like gameworks and physx doesn't work, but I wouldn't turn that shit on even if I still had an up-to-date nvidia-card.

It's easy for me. I won't support games where I am not only a second-class but a third-class-citizen!

If in the future there is no more competition and there only is nvidia, well... I'll happily stop gaming then. nvidia doesn't offer open source drivers, they use shady tactics, they betray, the lie, they are simply one of the worst companies on this planet and all they stand for is what I deem wrong with this society.

So, if we really one day have a monopoly... well, there is still minigolf and other fun activities :)

Valve Looks Like It's Removed The SteamOS Icon For Games That Work On Linux, But Not Perfectly On SteamOS

Quoting: MaelraneOh, easy to tell, because in Linux you have shared-libraries, where under Windows you statically link everything.
No you don't. Windows has shared (dll) libraries as well.
And now look how many games still ship their own static linked libraries ;)

Spoiler: A lot

Quoting: edoI think than Valve is just setting a quality standard for Linux games, for some reason its only needed on Linux since most of the games on macs and windows works without dramas. Its just not cool than on windows I can install and play anodyne, but on Linux I have to follow a tutorial about how to make that game works on the OS.
So yes, they are just doing what they have to do. And a tux icon would not fix anything, from now on, I would hope than if a game want to claim to support an OS (win, mac, linux or steamos), it should start without annoying workarounds.
Oh, easy to tell, because in Linux you have shared-libraries, where under Windows you statically link everything. And if a lib has a bug you're stuck with that in this particular game forever.

On the other hand, using a package-manager such as Nix could help...
See http://nixos.org/ [External Link] for an own distribution

I have to tinker with this sometime...

Quoting: liamdaweI think it would also be a nice idea for the Tux icon to sit next to the SteamOS icon too. I don't know how much work that would involve though, they could leave it to developers to tick either, or both, but then that's open to abuse if it only works on desktop Linux I guess.
That would actually be *the* solution. Just add 4 icons and make it so that for SteamOS Valve has to test it themselves (and maybe only allow Non-EA-titles?! So they don't have to check every other day)

Quoting: constAs long as they still work on it, I'm really not upset.
I am, because they promised to have a Linux-Version out by release or earlier.

I had good fate in them and bought a 4-pack as to support the development... well, that was naive Maelrane. Never again! I've learned my lesson dear, but I've learned it.
Someone didn't notice the amount of times we tell people not to buy before a Linux version exists ;)
That was a couple of months before I even found out that GoL existed... :p
