Steam Machine & Steam Frame FAQ - RAM and storage crisis to blame for no pricing or dates
5 Feb 2026 at 4:35 am UTC Likes: 4
If I had to choose between the two, I'd say it's at least better to release it while the prices are high. At least that way you can still price it competitively according to the market, even if barely anyone is buying hardware because of the cost.
The other option, delaying release too long, is just an unrecoverable situation since it guarantees an inability to compete.
I feel like the Frame and Controller can afford the delay. I assume the controller also has onboard memory and/or storage, so its price is likely affected as well even if not nearly as much as the other two.

Quoting: BumadarSo they can either sell now at to high a price because of the marketUnfortunately true. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. It doesn't seem farfetched to predict that, one way or another, the AI memory crisis is going to ruin the Steam Machine.
Or they sell next year with outdated specs for a still high price (memory won't drop big time next year)

One more question in the thread mentioned in the article was what I thought was another meaningful response:
Their current focus is probably on the server edition that was hinted in their end of year blog post [External Link].
I know a lot of people use the distro as a NAS OS due to their ZFS implementation. I'm interested in seeing what they implement in order to break out and into more broad environments.
Quoting: RedditorHave you considered offering Antheas a job on CachyOS Handheld Edition? He was the one who made things work at Bazzite and would be a great addition.
Quoting: ptr1337Could be a great technical enhancement, but we keep us away jumping into drama 😬Further emphasizing a desire to avoid potentially troublesome entanglements, along with the Playtron comment.

It'd be a good game for GOG to preserve, but it never received a PC release so it's ineligible. Thankfully ROMs exist.

Quoting: Tethys84QYME is referring to the PSP remake of IV, which many consider to be the best iteration of the game. It is not available on Steam. Or anywhere, as far as I can tell.Quoting: QYMEIt still a shame that ff4 years after, the pixel version, is stuck on the psp. We can only buy the 3d one nowadays. What? The pixel version is on Steam. Not sure what you are talking about.

That doesn't mean that there won't be contribution to what OGC is trying to accomplish. I imagine there will be a fair amount of borrowing from the CachyOS developers' work on their kernel and schedulers. Which is great. With Clear Linux now defunct there aren't exactly many choices for advanced kernel tech that's sufficiently tested for an end user's environment.

Quoting: fenglengshunThe rest of the Open Gaming Collective is interesting. Notably, CachyOS isn't on that list, despite Nobara which had been based on a lot of what CachyOS did (and PikaOS I think is based on Nobara) being on the group.I feel like this is due to the nature of this project vs Arch, the reluctance to make software decisions for the user, and the rolling release model. OGC is probably looking to implement concepts more in-line with their members(Bazzite, Nobara, et al) and that's always been quite opposite to the way Arch/CachyOS operates.

Quoting: scaineThe bootloader selection was updated to offer summaries of the choices to better help people choose, but most importantly the default selection was shifted from systemd-boot to Limine. This means that bootable snapshot integration will be available to the people that don't know enough to select something other than the default. Prior to this, new users just going with systemd-boot were at a pretty big disadvantage to those who selected Limine or Grub.Quoting: Liam DaweYeah, it's weird. When I fist installed this, about 8 months back, it asks if you want Grub, SystemD-boot or a couple of others. So it's technically been there for a while. I wonder how it's changed that warrants that update message?Quoting: CurupiraI'm not too clued up on it, but it seems it was done differently before. Direct from their blog post "bootloader selection has been moved directly into the installer".a significantly reworked installer, which also now includes bootloader selection
I can vouch that CachyOS installer included a bootloader selection screen since I've first tried it (more than a year ago). Maybe even earlier. :)
