Minecraft - The Wild Update is out now, Java & Bedrock now one purchase
7 Jun 2022 at 7:35 pm UTC

Quoting: brokeassbenNow if only the Windows Store purchase included the Java version
Uh, it does. That's what the article said.

Windows Store purchase == Bedrock edition.

When you fire up Minecraft Java, it asks you to login via Microsoft. It's done that for the last couple major versions. They deprecated and migrated the old Mojang accounts around that same time.

Quoting: PhlebiacNot sure why 1.10.0 was skipped, but 1.10.2 is already out.
Was my mistake when setting up the Release candidate. I used 1.10.0 for it instead of using an RC on the version name.

Then 1.10 started on 1.10.1 and then I released a fix for it already.
I love that we're all here armchairing HGL launches, and you're here giving serious answers to the questions. I salute you.

Also, howdy fellow Archer.

Pillars Of Eternity RPG Now Available To Pre-order, New Trailer Too

Quoting: oldrocker99This was the second project (after Fallout 3) that I Kickstarted, and, BOY am I eager to play!
I'm guessing you meant Wasteland 2, not Fallout. As a Kickstarter from way back when, I too am excited to play, and hopeful to do so as a registered and official Linux user.

Endless Legend Linux Port Started Months Ago, Looked Good

I think of myself as a gamer first, and a Linux user second. I'm willing to make compromises that many would not, in order to get my gaming fix. I run the Nvidia binary blob drivers, they are evil, but they are fast. On the other hand, I was happy to use bumblebee with my new laptop, it lets me use the FOSS Intel graphics stack for all but the most demanding games.

Steam for Linux has been such a mixed blessing for me. Beyond the binary nature of the Steam client itself, it's upsetting to have some of my games magically available, but not all of them. I end up using Wine or VMware to get the "real" Steam running, and then I just show up as yet another Windows user, which helps the lazier developers justify neglecting my preferred OS.

It's deeply conflicting.

Metro 2033 Redux & Metro Last Light Redux Launch On Linux, Sorta (UPDATED)
14 Dec 2014 at 6:27 pm UTC

Primus, 343.36, segfault.

[forge@M4800-Arch Metro 2033 Redux]$ primusrun ./metro
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Ended up buying it from a third party key reseller. Felt scummy and not something I'd usually do, but had little choice. I'm not paying an extra 8$ just because some people who preordered got upset.

Ok, I don't mean to wade in, but when folks are saying "no tesselation and no volumetric lighting", is that based on code/files or on observation? If observation, are you using the FOSS graphics stack or one of the proprietary ones? In particular, I remember some mention being made of OpenGL 4.0 being a requirement, are these features being disabled because they are seeing OGL 3.X?

Wasn't this on sale yesterday for 16.99$? It said "on sale till Monday 12/15", but today the bundle is up to 25$. A shame they upped the price just before I got paid. No sale. :\

Civilization: Beyond Earth To Launch Very Soon On Linux
12 Dec 2014 at 12:27 am UTC

This is one of the only times I regret having already purchased a game. I bought expecting to play this only on my Windows 'console', like Civ V before it, but now I'll be able to run it on my real machines. I'm chagrined. I do appreciate Aspyr letting me tag along with my sad Windows receipt, though. I'll watch more closely and purchase more slowly next time.

Major OpenGL Performance Improvements Inbound For Intel, Thanks To LunarG
6 Nov 2014 at 10:06 pm UTC

Quoting: drmothI read this earlier today. I'm struggling to direct my love towards a) Valve for funding them OR b) LunarG for bringing such awesome driver improvements to Linux. I think I'll need to ponder this some more...

I have an Nvidia card, but Intel Mesa drivers on my laptop are fast becoming a favourite. Having an open source driver makes a huge difference in terms of quality of integration and general out-of-the-box usability.
It's making life particularly delightful for me. I have an Nvidia Quadro K2100M, which I used to use exclusively, with Optimus disabled, for performance reasons. Since then, bumblebee and libgl-switcheroo have entered my life, and the Intel driver just keeps getting better and better as well! If AMD genuinely does manage to get their Linux driver sorted, I can switch one of those in later, as well! Hate to sound like I'm crowing, but it's a great time to be a Linux advocate and gamer!
