The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2023

DistroWatch rankings are utterly useless. Please stop using them, it’s just page hits on their website.

For everyone who has a good experience on anything, there will be someone saying they had a bad experience. That’s just life and doesn’t change my opinion that Ubuntu is the best starting point for most people.

I don't think anyone is arguing against updates being important :)

Quoting: fireplaceThis is all old stuff. NVidia (and most companies in general) publish these reports long after everything has been privately patched. Your software update may look like any other, but there is a good chance it has security fixes. That's why Torvalds doesn't like when people treat security fixes and bug fixes differently. They're all equally important :)
I'm afraid it's not all old stuff. In this case previous drivers were compromised, as their bulletin points out you need all the latest drivers in each series, as all previous are vulnerable and the fixed drivers were only released on November 22nd so many people will be out of date.
The standard "Make sure to keep X up to date" has nothing to do whether any previous version was vulnerable. The CVEs are reported at a much later date by then. Updates will keep coming and new exploits will arise. But all of that doesn't matter. You should keep your software up to date regardless of whether it's a "security fix" or not. Bugs are bugs.
I really don't know what you're trying to get at. The security bulletin is clear about all prior versions to those listed in the article released on November 22nd as being vulnerable.

November's Steam Survey shows another uptick for Linux thanks to Steam Deck

It's also interesting to see that SteamOS and the Steam Deck GPU percentages match in the Linux data, making Windows on Steam Deck a tiny minority.
We can compare them directly now that the Deck GPU shows up in the global stats. The Decks represent 0.37% of the machines sampled for the survey (from the GPU list), and SteamOS is the OS for 0.371% of the machines sampled (it's weird that Valve don't list SteamOS directly on the front page). The number of people sampled running Windows on the Deck must be narrowly edged out (to the tune of 0.001%) by people running SteamOS on something that isn't the Deck, with both being essentially nil because of the number of people running SteamOS on something other than the Deck not being big enough to show up in the Linux stats, as you point out in the article.
You're quite right, my focus was specifically on Windows and Linux since it didn't show up elsewhere before but being in the main combined stats certainly helps us see that! Surprised I missed it initially heh.

The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2023

I won't ever recommend people use something like Nobara. Regardless of who runs it, the point is pointing people towards tiny random distributions that could vanish at any point is not going to help Linux and Linux Gaming in the long run. If I'm going to put my reputation on a recommendation for a distribution, it's going to be one with a long history of support and good backing. Hopefully that makes sense.

Top-down PvPvE Battle Royale game Gene Shift Auto now free to play on Steam

Quoting: b4lvBut it's been free to play for years. The only change here is the game's name.
It was not. It's been a paid game for years, but you got the DLC free when you bought it. The developer mentioned many times it was going free, and they did a few giveaways previously. You can see easily on SteamDB going back years how much it cost: https://steamdb.info/app/308600/ [External Link]

Heroic Games Launcher v2.5.0 is out with Downloads Manager, App Sideloading

Sideloading just means third-party. In this case, not from Heroic directly. It fits fine IMO.

Quoting: slaapliedjeWtf is app sideloading on Linux? All it really means on Android/iOS is to install something outside of the Google/Apple store. It isn't like this hasn't always been a thing in computer land.

Does this feature just add shortcuts for stuff installed via apt/dnf (for example)?
It's explained right there in the article. Adding and installing things from outside Heroic.
