The comedy adventure game 3 Minutes to Midnight is on Kickstarter with Linux support

They just replied and told me this:
Hi Liam!! Thanks for contacting us! It's highly probable that we will release PC, Mac, and Linux at the same time. The stretch goal is to speed it up and make it happen sooner. But to be clear, the Linux version doesn't depend on the success of the campaign. I hope it clarifies!

The Linux port of Shadow of Mordor from Feral Interactive has gained a Vulkan Beta, a massive difference

Quoting: YoRHa-2BAnd here's why it beats Proton and, in fact, Windows:

Not complaining though since the game's AO is quite inefficient and reducing resolution doesn't seem to have a visual impact. And in the CPU-bound case, the port probably still beats us, so good job.
Very interesting!

Since I got curious, I've gone back and done more tests with AO completely off and put a bit up on that too. Thanks for the info!

Also, someone said this on Reddit [External Link] about my article:
A reddit post linking to an article based on a reddit post based on a reddit comment. Now that's something new.
Just to be clear, we were given a tip many hours before Reddit picked it up, by the person thanked at the bottom of the article. This post has nothing to do with Reddit. I waited for personal confirmation from Feral that it was meant to be public, which I got earlier today. It wouldn't have been great to post all this up, if they suddenly made it private again, I was doing my job - not that Reddit cares they just like to make digs.

Quoting: YoRHa-2BFWIW, since someone already attacked me over my comment: The only reason I looked into this in the first place is because DXVK seemed unusually slow in comparison and I obviously wanted to know why, to see if there's maybe something I can improve. I'm not attacking Feral, far from it, I like their work and having officially supported games like this is important.
I really can't understand how anyone could attack you over something like this, hope you told them where to go :P

Mac/Linux is at the very beginning of the stretched goals (but I didn't tell you that *wink wink*).
I think you already wrote about this, but enabling ports by stretch goals seems plain stupid to me:
As long as the campaign is below the stretch goal, I might invest in something I cannot play,
as soon as it reached it, the stretch goal lost its motivation for Linuxers.
I'm in two minds about it and my thoughts on it change over time. Especially as I understand why it's done sometimes. We all know Linux ports of smaller games (not talking Feral's AAA here) don't sell much on Linux and so it can be a way for a developer to ensure the initial Linux version is actually worth it.

Given how this campaign is trending [External Link], I can't imagine it not blasting past a couple of stretch goals.

Either way, I will update when the developer replies. I told them to make it a lot clearer and quoted the confusing parts + what they said on Reddit which did not mention a stretch goal.

I've messaged them to clear it up.

Quoting: TcheyOn my Manjaro, the game crash while loading a new game. I can access menu and all, but when i'm done, i see the loading screen, and crash to desktop without warning.

However, if i go to local folder and open a Terminal to launch the game, it works, showing this :

./Dominus\ Galaxia.x86_64
Set current directory to /home/tchey/Jeux/dominus-galaxia
Found path: /home/tchey/Jeux/dominus-galaxia/Dominus Galaxia.x86_64
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; SteamAPI_IsSteamRunning() failed.
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to locate a running instance of Steam, or a local steamclient.so.

So i can play, but not from itchio.
Worked out of the box for me on Manjaro. I just used the launch script with Vulkan because why not, worked well for me.

Quoting: DesumGoing to be interesting to compare Feral's pre-baked Vulkan wrapper to DXVK.
Just to keep expectations in check (and I think we all know people will be trying to compare the two come release day!), several points to keep in mind:
* Rise of the Tomb Raider I couldn't run through wine at all. I know there's been a bit of hassle from others trying to run Shadow of the Tomb Raider, so it seems a bit hit & miss. Worth considering that.
* Again based on Rise, some machines might perform much better with Feral's work. Or not. I say this based on machines with 6 cores (which I have) or more getting a much smoother experience.
* Support. Ok, that doesn't affect performance, but I'd take a few fps hit for the safety of support for the game.
* Features. At this point we don't know if anything is changed (texture formats, extra or missing graphical details, that kind of thing) which can impact results one way or another. Apples to apples comparisons may therefore be difficult.
* Feral have their game mode launcher. It'll be worth making sure anything wine based runs the same way.

Almost all games of native Vulkan port vs DXVK that I've seen (and really there aren't many) give pros & cons to each. I would expect the same here.
In addition, Feral work on the shader system so it actually loads them all in too, which should result in smooth gameplay. Proton doesn't do that of course.

Quoting: Sojiro84I guess my normal version of the game I bought and played on Windows before finally switching over, doesn't get a basic edition of the game that is Linux compatible?

Would be nice if it did, but no harm if it doesn't. But I won't buy the game twice though.
Usually the Linux version is added to all Steam packages, all previous Feral ports have so you shouldn't have an issue. Otherwise people switching from Windows to Linux would have to buy it again which is not what Steam is supposed to be about, unless the games have a specific Linux/Windows version separation with unique store pages (like Arma 2 for Mac/Linux [External Link])

As I said, the discourse surrounding this all is fine, I made a pretty clear point about it ;). I'll leave the "confrontational" comments at the door, so we can just move past that and get back to the topic.

As for Proton, I've never said anywhere it's the "only way forward". I did say in an article it can help break the cycle, however there are many different ways forwards. In fact, I've given multiple reasons why Proton also concerns me at the same time multiple times too.

Quoting: GuestLook, I know this is a touchy subject, and maybe I should just shut up about it too. But others have strongly held opinions that are just as valid as yours are. Personally, I will be buying this from Feral, and held off on buying the Windows port. AFAIC, if you're not going to support Linux developers, why bother using Linux at all??
I never said anyone's opinion wasn't valid :). I'm glad people held off on buying it, to support Feral when it arrives. Feral have been good for the Linux gaming ecosystem and I love their games.
