It’s a tough time to be an indie developer, with Steam’s new sale event causing wishlist deletions

Not when every single developer I've spoken to, or seen talk about it in public, is showing that the problem started when the sale started and it's never happened like this before, not even close.
Maybe it is just some collective perception problem? People would be removing things from their wishlist they wouldn't be buying anyway, so the "lost" sale is not really lost, it would never happen. It's just the start of the Steam sales which started midweek, I think it's natural people are still not buying in bulk because the sales still has one week and a half to go -- and frankly, due to the daily sales and some games which only get a discount later, I think it is expected users wait a little to spend their money. It's too early to infer the trends!
I'll just repeat myself since it's not sinking in..

This has not happened with any other sale to this level. It's a result of the gamification of the wishlist system with people not quite understanding it.

Do a search for "steam wishlist" and things like that on Twitter and spot all the fires ;)

But at the same time, correlation != causation. The simple fact is that people probably spend more time in the wishlist during sale time and that alone could be the cause of the increase in wishlist deletions. I recently removed a ton of games that I no longer had interest in from my wishlist. Had nothing to do with the sale, I just realized I had a lot of games I'll never get to even if I did buy them. I can't be the only one.
I touched on that in the article actually. Sales always see a small drop but never like this, the entire point of the article.

Classic open source RTS "Seven Kingdoms: Ancient Adversaries" has a brand new release out

Quoting: ColomboSorry Liam, I don't want to sound negative, you might even consider me a fanboy, but I couldn't overlook some of your comments:

considering how basic it is
Its not basic. Its incredibly deep with a relatively simple system. You wouldn't call Go "basic" as well, would you?
I get what you're saying, but you seem to have glossed over what I actually said:
how basic it is compared to a lot of modern games
I'm talking in hindsight here, how it amused me to think how many hours I put into this when I was younger versus far more complex games now.

As for this:
Quoting: Colombo
it wasn't even revolutionary
It was. And it is. Seven Kingdoms combines a simple resources->product->customer network from trade simulations (a lot of the code is identical to Capitalism, buildings are still called "Firm"), direct representation of population (I don't think that any game did it to this detail), everyone has skill like in "RPG" and skill-based abilities. Add spies, politics (could be improved), reputation, loyalty (you need to pay your people), different nationalities and their effect on loyalty, taxes...

And thats not some Grand Strategy Game or Turn Based game, but RTS!

No other game combined all of these things, hell even half of these things, in a complex, yet quickly understandable package.
I agree it has some interesting features in it, hence me enjoying it and still writing about it many years later. But it is in many ways still quite a basic game. Both in terms of how you control everything, graphical features, amount of unique units and the list goes on. Remember, this is around the same time Imperium Galactica, Age of Empires, Dark Reign, NetStorm: Islands At War, Total Annihilation, Command & Conquer: Red Alert and plenty more came out.

DOSBox is still alive, with a new bug fix release available

They're also still working on the next major release with DOSBox 0.75
I know, it's just a number, but isn't DOSBox at 0.74-x for more than a decade? :D
The problem is, for such a project keeping compatibility for so many titles must be a pretty huge order.

Quoting: kneekoo"Monitors" should rather be named "Number of monitors", because it can be confusing. I was on the trends page (hint Ubuntu :P) and I thought the monitors trends had broken label associations and we got their indexes/IDs instead of the names. Programmer issue, but we're still people. :P
I've adjusted that, I can see how it could be confusing. It's now named "Number of monitors" and I've also added a dash separator between the label and the amount so hopefully that makes it easier.

Move or Die, one of the funniest party games around has added the previously exclusive PS4 content onto PC
26 Jun 2019 at 2:29 pm UTC

Quoting: HoriAn amazing game. Great for local coop

Happy for any new content

By the way:
As the name suggests, if you don't stop moving, you will die.
It's quite the opposite. If you stop moving, you die. You have to move all the time or you're losing health.
Good catch, the wrong word snuck in there :)

Quoting: PatolaI wish it had more flexibility in the controllers part. Since we Linux users are not mainstream, it's quite useful to know when some other people have more unusual controllers, like HOTAS sets or steering wheels.
Suggestions? I am happy to make adjustments, but I can't act on vague stuff like that. What do you want changed/added?
Nothing too fancy, I think an extra field where you could enter a list of the devices you use would do. :)
I will think on this, that sounds like it would get pretty messy, especially to get some kind of chart out of it.

Quoting: liamdaweWell, Awesome is just a Window Manager, so you're using KDE as your desktop?
Yeah, but Awesome chooses to not follow some of the more cruft-y EWMH specs (only one virtual workspace over all monitors, for example), so my desktop is differently compatible than normal KDE.
Still KDE and all the programs associated though? If you use KDE, you use KDE ;)
