There has been several big issues for people switching branches, with the Steam Deck getting stuck in loops and all sorts. I really do not recommend switching to Main, as said in the article. It's not meant for normal users.

It's both sad and funny that some (hi Reddit) [External Link] feel like this article is "revisionist" because I'm celebrating Valve and Proton here, but they and others like them miss the point so badly.

Yes, Wine is great and CodeWeavers are fab for funding Wine for so long too. BUT if something is difficult to use and obscure (Wine is, let's face it) then people won't really care. Valve are the ones that boosted it, funded DXVK and VKD3D-Proton, funded Mesa driver work, expanded Wine with Proton tying it all together and literally put it in front of millions of gamers while making it the click of a button.

This is why I say that Valve and Proton are what forever changed Linux gaming. I know most will understand it, but as usual, some need to take issue with a celebration and make a fight out of it. How sad.

Don’t even get me started on the people trying to claim things were good pre-Steam 🤣

Their Flathub package is the main means of distribution for Linux. They maintain it themselves. Did you try installing it that way? I really hope you're not one of those "never Flatpak ever!!" people...

I use the Flatpak for the stable version.

That makes sense, but it's really easy to install betas and switch between beta and stable versions with Flatpak. You can keep them both installed and change which branch is active at any time.

I don't see anywhere that notes Flathub has a Beta branch for it?

Applies the other way around as well. Some games update and stop working and reports of previous versions keep the rating high long after the time it started to fail. A reduced weight for older reports or older proton versions would definitely help.

A "trend" rating could be helpful.

It does have that, with a squiggly arrow on the rating at times. Needs to be made clearer though.

Yeah, there's a lot of issues like that. Which is on top of lots of reports that are clearly just wrong. I hope eventually they do some moderation and cleaning up of reports directly.
