According to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney - game stores don't need an AI label as it will be everywhere

I'd like a fine grained heat-map style indicator e.g I want to know if a game is using AI Coding (which would be like a 1), or if it's using AI for all art assets (that would be a 5). With different levels in between, e.g if furniture is AI generated that might be a 2 or 3. Depending on the use of AI. For some things it won't matter, and for other things it's so unethical it should just be banned.

I wish iD software would get someone in to replace Timothy Bessett at porting games to Linux. His ports were incredible he was carrying half the Linux FPS community on his shoulders for a long time.

Howto port a game to Linux: Basically stub out the Graphics Code. Then work on Keyboard/Mouse/Gamepads/Joysticks etc where used. Then replace Audio Code/Network Code. Once this is all completed/tested. Attack the Graphics stack.

GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) version 3.0 is finally out now
19 Mar 2025 at 5:59 am UTC

Honestly I don't care about GTK4, it's an ugly API and it breaks a lot of menu/taskbar related stuff that GTK3 gets right, and GTK3 is fully compatible with Wayland so GTK4 is really for the GNOME fans.

GIMP-3.0 is an awesome milestone, now hopefully the race to 3.2 can happen quickly. The new shape tools are desperately needed. It's the number 1 gripe I have with using GIMP as a drawing/art tool. There really isn't a great tool for this in Open Source currently. GIMP-3.2 could be the turning point for GIMP as an art tool. The new plugin system will hopefully be adopted quickly and GIMP can be much more powerful with a full plugin set than it has been for the last 10 years due to dependence on Python 2 vs 3.

Descent 3: Piccu Engine is a new open source build focused on quality-of-life improvements

I'd like to see VR added to Descent 3. I reckon it's a prime candidate for it.

Descent 3 has been made open source
17 Apr 2024 at 5:56 am UTC

Ah man, Descent 3 what a time. 1999 I preordered Freespace2. That was the start of my game modding. Between the Descent 1/2 level editors and Freespace 1/2. Then Descent 3 dropped. Descent developer tools were a revolution. For the first time being able to see inside the process of making games and being able to explore the files. It changed my life forever. A lot of the ideas behind Vegastrike were inspired by the Descent/Freespace series toolkits. And who could forget Loki Software? Linux native Descent 3 shipped with libSDL and the Loki Games update tools. Absolutely epic time.

Heroes of Might and Magic II game engine fheroes2 v1.0.8 out now
24 Sep 2023 at 1:19 am UTC

They should take fheroes2, drop the code into a second repository and strip out all the Heroes 2 features to make an open source version of Heroes of Might and Magic 1. The engines are very similar, it's just Heroes 1 is a less refined version of Heroes 2.

Heart of the Machine from Arcen Games dropping Native Linux for Proton
15 Aug 2023 at 10:05 am UTC

Linux native gaming is basically dead. Even the big boys like ID software don't bother supporting it anymore. Emulation seems to be the developer's choice. Most of the native games are community ports of sourcecode releases or fan remakes of older
popular AAA games.
