GOG have something mysterious planned for December 1st

Quoting: buenaventuraI think that a cool marketing strategy would be to just do nothing tomorrow, and people will go insane, and they will get lots of attention :P
I'm pretty sure Valve has copyrighted that one.

The Talos Principle updated again, new public beta improves their Vulkan support some more

Quoting: ShmerlWhat's going on with Croteam games by the way? Why don't they sell them on GOG (besides two old Serious Sam games)?
Here's what the devs had to say about this: [url=steamcommunity.com/app/257510/discussions/0/626329186809171707/]steamworks alternative + having to support an additional build[/url].

Although their supporting linux kinda collides with the latter :S. I was hoping I'd be able to get talos' sequel from gog, but then I found the link posted above.

Feral Interactive's Linux ports may come with Vulkan sooner than we thought (UPDATED)

Quoting: srlsboyBethesda actually took the time to port Skyrim to Nintendo's NX platform.
That new console was rumored to offer Vulkan support but Nintendo went for a lock-in API called NVN.
We know nothing about NVN other than the fact it's a "Gaming" API developed by Nvidia. We've also had no new info regarding the switch (after the First Look vid) afaik, therefore for all we know NVN could be irrelevant to graphics and while I do believe that if that were to be the case we'd have probably heard about Vulkan powering the Switch as well, there's no reason why Nintendo wouldn't support an additional graphics api.

Nintendo could still add compatibility for complementary apis other than its proprietary developed one, similarly to what all other consoles tend todo.

Nintendo lost in all of the latest console wars (except for handhelds maybe?). If they want people to go out and buy this underdog thing they'll need third party game support and not every publisher is going to support nintendo unless its easy or profitable enough for them to do so. Therefore Nintendo is likely to support Vulkan as a compatibility option for pc devs to bring their games over faster (well, assuming pc devs will be using vulkan by then in any case :P )

Linux & Steam running on the PS4 playing Bastion is impressive

Quoting: wvstolzingI wonder why Sony initially had official support for Linux on the PS2 (link [External Link], as well as the PS3 (link [External Link], only to remove it wholly afterwards. It's not like they had Steam to worry about back then.
There were 2 reasons why sony launched ps2/ps3 with such support, those would be multi-use marketing and most importantly the avoidance of taxes applying to game consoles in EU.

Launching their consoles with support for otheros and whatnot basically allowed sony to pass them as "multimedia centers" or whatever and reduce their taxation.

Nvidia 364.19 stable driver released, featuring Vulkan, Wayland & Mir support

Quoting: crazyg4merzI see. So the only way out is Nvidia to cooperate as the others are not gonna redo their works and it's not good when you have to support drivers with different approach. So is it hard for Nvidia to change their Wayland implementation? Is it gonna be a whole lot to do for them to change? I hope it's just an easy fix so we don't have to wait too long for it, or Nvidia is done in Linux community when Fedora is using Wayland by default. Really a dumb move by them though :(
Considering nvidia's dominance in the market (thankfully it's only dominant on linux where gaming is concerned) the wayland devs might be the ones to blink first in the end, though I really hope they don't.

It's harder for them though since they are the ones trying to push for wayland, nvidia is just "providing support". If some compositors were to accept nvidia's way it's likely that everyone will support it.

Even if nobody cooperates any time soon that's hardly going to be an issue for the average user, x11 is going to be available (installed by default) for a loooong time in fedora and any other desktop distro. Whether it's the default is irrelevant, if your system can't run wayland it will revert back to X11 (on the login manager, whether you choose to login with a broken compositor is another thing) and you'll still have an x based wm/deto use.

Quoting: crazyg4merzAfaik weston is not used by Gnome and other WM as they have their own compositor. So if Gnome developers decided to support it, we can get it working in Gnome right? Is Nvidia doing it the right way or is it just Gnome doing it using their own way? I really don't understand why are there different ways just to support wayland, so what's working on Nvidia driver if we can't even test the weston itself which is the default compositor of Wayland? Sorry I'm a noob in this kind of thing. :)
I only referenced weston cause it's the example/reference compositor maintained by the wayland devs that's meant to showcase wayland and its capabilities. No serious de is going to use weston as a base (besides most of the big de's wms are already ported over and standalone compositors won't fork it either).

Basically my understanding of the whole situation goes like this: The wayland devs and everyone related decided to go with gbm while nvidia was totally absent and now nvidia comes along with their own alternative after everyone has implemented the solution agreed upon.

In order for EGLStreams to work out wayland compitors are going to have to support them and, apart from software not being written and maintained by its own, that would fragment development and possibly even the wayland compositor scene (an already fragmented place compared to X11 where there's something more substantial besides a protocol for the compositors to implement).

tldr nvidia was late to the party and now they request that the party be restarted for them, the wayland devs are not against eglstreams due to design issues, but rather due to the fact that nvidia are being assholes trying to fix a non existent issue all over again just cause they like their solution better and don't much care about everyone else. (not really a tldr)

Quoting: runeThey are still using EGLStreams, etc, so nothing has changed at all. So for now, if you want to use nvidia with wayland, the only option is to use the nouveau driver.
They are indeed and I don't think they'll be switching to gbm any time soon though depending on their implementation and their inclination towards blink games wayland compositor devs may choose to support them anyway.

Quoting: crazyg4merzWayland support without DE support. Is there any link concerning this problem in Nvidia forum? I want to see the answer from Nvidia about this. Thanks :)
idk about the nvidia forums but there was a discussion [External Link] regarding Nvidia's EGLStreams going on in the wayland-devel mailing list.

The weston guys didn't really like it enough to support it, as did everyone else.

This new update seems to be featuring some extra work towards wayland support. Perhaps they'll like it better this time.

Nvidia 364.19 stable driver released, featuring Vulkan, Wayland & Mir support

Quoting: martinoj2009If I install this driver does that mean I can use the GNOME Wayland option in Fedora 23? Whenever I try GNOME Wayland it just bounces me back to the login screen and I have to use any other desktop environment. I have Nvidia 361.42.
You won't be able to use wayland with these drivers, wayland support isn't really there.
Basically Nvidia wants to provide wayland support through egl extensions and nobody seems to like their approach so it's not getting upstream support for anything really.

For you to be able to use the nvidia drivers with gnome, Mutter (gnome's wm and wayland compositor) would have to support the nvidia blob's wayland implementation. I'm actually waiting for nvidia to get their shit together so as to be able to run Sway (an i3 compatible wayland wm based on wlc, a wayland compositor library) on my desktop :/

Looks like Dota 2 with Vulkan isn't too far away

Quoting: GuestVery nice, can't wait to see it.

And woah if they're not doing multithreading on vulkan, they might as well still be using OpenGL.
They haven't done any optimization yet, they simply got the game running with Vulkan for release, you can read all about their optimization/engine redesign masterplan in the steam forums [External Link].
