What have you been playing recently and what are your thoughts?

Betrayer [External Link], via SteamPlay. Striking visual style, though I turned the contrast down because the stark black and white was making my eyes bleed.

AMD just recently had a 'Take A Way' security issue for their CPUs disclosed
8 Mar 2020 at 2:19 pm UTC

Ok, there's a security issue, but what is the security issue exactly, please? I see they both involve "shared memory," but that's about all I can really understand from the paragraph, and since I don't know what that is, I don't really understand anything.

Is this something I need to be concerned about, really? Or is this one of those security exploits requiring, like, someone has physical access to the computer, is logged in as root, and has a valid driver's license in 3 countries or some such?

Intel chipsets have another security issue, this time it's 'unfixable'

Last weekend, out went my venerable i7 4950 and in went a shiny new Ryzen 9 3900X.

*mic drop*

As Puppygames reflect on the release of Basingstoke, they say it financially ruined them
4 Mar 2020 at 1:34 pm UTC

Scope creep sounds insidious. It's easy to imagine how it could happen to new, startup dev teams, but it happens to veteran teams too, and that surprises me. I'd imagine that it's a well known problem in the industry and that guarding against it would be rather ingrained into project planning and management. I'd imagine it, and clearly I'd be wrong because it happens to big AAA crews and little ones alike.

More than any other reason, I downloaded Basingstoke from Itch for free as a sign of gratitude for their generosity towards Linuxians. I'm really not much for stealth games, generally, but figured if I really dug it I'd go back and pay them an appropriate amount. As yet, though, I've not played it.

I hope only the best for them.

A new Steam Client Beta is up, fixing some annoyances for Linux users
4 Mar 2020 at 1:10 pm UTC

Quoting: liamWith the Linux version of Steam, they've also now disabled the CEF keyring integration by default as it was causing prompts to come up for both GNOME and KDE desktops to ask for a password.
Is this is about having to re-enter my password when launching Steam every once in a while? I'm on XFCE and it happens to me often enough that I keep a shortcut to a text file with my password on the desktop.

I'm glad it's been resolved for my Gnome and KDE brethren and sistren. I hope the fix is the same for XFCE --- if this is the same problem, that is. If not, oh well, I'll just keep doing like I've done for years now. :)

Physics-based medieval siege engine battler 'Besiege' leaves Early Access after 5 years
20 Feb 2020 at 11:46 am UTC

I've been charmed by Besieged since it came on the scene five years ago, so, yesterday, when I saw that it had left beta and was 50% off, I bought it on the spot.

I hope it won't be another five years before I get around to playing it.

Urban turn-based tactics arrives on Linux with Black Powder Red Earth

1. The name Black Powder, Red Earth is poetry. Straight up.

2. I find the idea of playing on the side of a "dictatorship of a failing petrostate" to be only slightly more disheartening than playing "a brutal jihadist insurgency" opposing it. Which is to say, I don't want to play either side, neither fascist capitalist henchmen or fanatical religious thugs. Blech.

Vulkan overlay layer 'MangoHud' continues advancing quickly with a big new release
14 Feb 2020 at 1:24 pm UTC

When it comes time to upgrade Mangohub --- say from (I'm making this up) v1.5 to v2.0 --- is it as simple as downloading the new tar.gz and running install.sh again, or is it necessary to find and delete any/all old files first? I only ask because in the latter case I wonder if it wouldn't be easier to clone the project instead?

It looks like an awesome project, all the same. Thanks for making the NMS video as well.

BATTLETECH considered complete with one last patch coming, Harebrained moving on

I find it refreshing to hear that a game is going to be "done." I mean, it's a pity to hear about the memory leak Aquabat's talking about not being corrected, but nowadays it feels like I'm always hearing about games being constantly adjusted, patched, and "balanced."
