Need help with GOG games on Linux desktop and Steam Deck? Check out the Heroic Games Launcher that just recently had an upgrade.
Hot take: GOG wouldn't be worth it for us Linux gamers if it wasn't for Heroic and the projects it relies on (like gogdl and comet).

Delve in for the titles that are not available on Steam: https://www.gog.com/en/games/tags/only-on-gog [External Link]
Heroic is awesome, but gog would still be worth it for the drm-free downloads.

The lack a stupid compulsory shop application just to extract the data files for use in an open source interpreter of my choice is a breath of fresh air in the digital purchases space. So is the fact that gog, unlike a certain other shop, isn't blocking access to a third party launcher.

Before some comments come along to try and wriggle this into a “Native Linux is better” type of argument, that’s just nonsense. We’ve seen numerous games remove their Native Linux builds completely, or drop support for them, heck I wrote about one such case earlier today. Native vs Proton is not the issue, platform support is, regardless of how the games are made to work.
Native linux is better

That is, however, not relevant to the discussion of proton support. I think you put your finger fairly correctly on the pain spot: there is no label with which devs can indicate that they will support proton.

This is not only confusing for the users, it's also unfair to devs that have committed themselves to supporting it.

I've got a fairly rigorous personal policy when it comes to games with in-game spending or even some of the ones that come with much non-free dlc: they are out.

I simply will not allow such adversarial design elements in my gaming time.

Quoting: finaldestHere we go again,

When will folks learn that physical media is the only true way to have ownership.

I know PC games generally don't get physical releases so I now buy PS4 and PS5 games when I want a copy to preserve. Most PlayStation games work offline without ever needing an update but PS5 does have a backup option built in.

I still primarily buy games on Steam but accept the risk I could lose games in the future. I will also be using GOG where possible to buy games I want to preserve as they offer a direct download of the installer.

I now have over 600 Movies and 30 PS4/5 Games on physical. I now refuse to just rely on 3rd parties with my media purchases.
True ownership has nothing to do with physical media: any drm-free game purchased digitally grants you more ownership than any disk (or even cartridge) release that comes preloaded with a phone-home-to-see-if-the-publisher-grants-permission-to-play check.

Even this current case still allows you to get your eternally playable copy before they remove it - where the shutdown of a grant-permission-server would have blocked you from playing it in the future if this game had had drm restrictions.

KDE Plasma 6.2 adding a pop-up for donations, plus they want to make a next-generation KDE OS

Why? It's free software, simply asking for funding. That's an "egregious abuse" in your book? If so, your book is stunningly privileged. Free and Libre Open Source Software is an absolute anomaly in our (mostly) capitalist society. Give them some money, and if you have no money to give, then at least don't complain when they beg for funds once a year, in a trivially ignored pop-up.
Asking for money is fine, using a position of power on a system to deliver that message at a time it is likely to break a user's workflow, without their consent, is not.

That has nothing to do with privilege, more with avoiding conflicts of interest and respecting other people's boundaries (both sorely lacking in modern software development).

Edit: replaced "inconvenient"

Not a fan, to put it mildly.

However much the funding is needed, it is an abuse of kde's position on the system it has been installed on. Other projects having more egregious donation requests is no excuse, especially since most of those do not have the position of trust on the system that kde does.

What would make it much more acceptable to me is if it were an opt-in through the welcome screen and/or notification settings. A simple "remind me to consider a donation" option.

Quoting: marcin1509Heroic launcher allows to use proton for games from all platforms or only when using it from steam games? Others are ran with wine or in other way?
Heroic allows one to set either one for any game, regardless of whether the game is also available on steam or not.

Not too fond of the micro-transaction style currency, but the rest is fine.
It's kinda funny thinking of how hard people bitched about DLC and still do (like when they're bashing Paradox games just of having DLCs). DLC typically is both optional and a one-time purchase, in other words: open and transparent. I miss the days when it was JUST DLC. Now we're getting all these shady business practices like obfuscated micro-transaction currencies, lootboxes and my new personal favorite: Gatcha. I wonder if that's truly better...
I will freely admit it is partly about perception; if I feel that said publisher/dev is in the business of playable monetisations, they're out.

Given my insane backlog and the high number of high quality releases without such nonsense, I have no qualms erring on the side of caution when considering to purchase a game. Which means that, at the moment, paradox is on my ignore list.

As for this game, I think I'd rather dig up my old copy of hamsterball and see if I can get it running ^_^
