Intel chipsets have another security issue, this time it's 'unfixable'

Quoting: F.Ultra
Quoting: Purple Library GuyI don't really like Intel, but this doesn't really worry me. I mean,
Quotethey would need some sort of physical and local access
Why are we even expecting any kind of compute-y thing to be secure when someone has physical and local access? That was never a thing when I was young, and I'm fairly convinced that if we think it's a thing now it's mainly wishful thinking.

Think servers, when you use a resource remotely on a server (e.g a HTTP request to a web server, or a SMTP request to a mail server and so forth) you have a form of local access to that server (and if the software have some form of vulnerability as well then you definitely have local access, even if that application is securely sandboxed).

And if you are in a big server room then you have physical access to those servers without necessarily have the kind of physical access that you would have if you stole a laptop from someone.

So these recent vulnerabilities are not so much of a desktop problem as they are a server problem, just like many of the other recent Spectre variants.

Not to mention the virtual computing one can rent over at Amazon, Microsoft, Google and the like. I imagine those sort of systems make heavy use of local security features.

OpenRA for classic Red Alert and Command & Conquer has a new test build up

Quoting: EhvisBut no Dune 2! I suppose it's mostly similar to Dune 2000, but that's not the one I played loads of. :D

Apparently, there is the D2 mod: https://github.com/OpenRA/d2
On a side note (non-openra), another alternative would be Dune Legacy: http://dunelegacy.sourceforge.net/website/index.html

Puppygames have formally announced Battledroid - a massively multiplayer strategy game

That'll be their first game I'm not buying (and that's not some joke about the f2p nature of the game, I'm skipping this one) ;_;

Psyonix are ending support for Rocket League on both Linux and macOS (updated)

This game is a poster child of why one should be very weary of spending money on "games as a service". Apart from it being "taking out features games used to have included in their base price and charging extra for them", it has the added "benefit" of having those basic features stolen from you at a moments notice.

Unity for the user interface and store :D

Things are going downhill for the Atari VCS as Rob Wyatt quits

Whoddatunkit.

With the current atari's (infogrames) track record (both in crowdfunding and their history in milking nostalgia with manure), this was rather a likely outcome.

RetroArch, the front-end app for emulators and more is heading to Steam

> However, you can also find things like the NeoGeo Classic Complete Collection which comes with with ROMs too legally from places like Humble Store.

Additional legal ROM source tip: On steam itself you can also get the sega mega drive collection. It's regularly on sale for around $10. That collection has notoriously bad emulation and a silly bloated 3d interface, but you can just copy-paste the rom files for use in an emulator of your own choice and then uninstall sega's bloated mess.

Raspberry Pi 4 announced and available - sounds like a pretty nice upgrade, Raspbian now based on Debian 10

Quoting: finaldestI didn't know they were so cheap

I have never used one but I may now look into getting one to use as an emulator at those prices. I have also seen a few sweet custom cases on YouTube that are build to fit so may get one of these also.

Thanks for the heads up.

Make sure that those cases' designs caught up with the new pi's layout.

Lots of native closed-source Linux games, like "Aquaria" (which developers went defunct)
...

Funny you mention Aquaria, one of the few exceptions that prove the rule, since it's been open sourced for years:

The Linux-powered Atari VCS is getting upgraded to AMD Ryzen, shipping dates pushed back
18 March 2019 at 11:18 pm UTC Likes: 2

Colour me surprised. I know I promised not to comment on Atari any more, but this is too rich. They needed months to find out that, contrary to their claims at the time, ryzen thrashes the bristol ridge, even within the same power and thermal envelopes?

What's next, some research into whether a via c3 would not have been better?

It's also going to put them straight back at square one with development: no way in hell are they going to get it shipped in 2019.
