As a long time ETS2/ATS gamer (since 2014?), I can only wholeheartedly agree.
Beyond the game itself that make up for the best way to wind down after a long week @work, SCS itself (along with Egosoft) is simply amazing when it comes to adding gratis value to their existing games (along w/ reasonably priced DLCs). From new trucks, trailers to updated maps and greatly improved base engine.

Here's for 10 more years!

Actually, X2 had a native Linux port (LGP) that worked amazingly good.
X3:R also had a native Linux port (LGP), which worked just as well, but a DRM feature that died with the company.
X3:TC and X3:AP, X:R and now X4 were ported by Egosoft themselves and offered in Steam, and all still work out of the box offering Windows like performance. (Sometimes even better).

In short, minus X3:R that had a good port with broken DRM, most of Egosoft games work under Linux out of the box.

Sadly enough, no go.
I managed to get a couple of old libraries required to start the game, but it fails when trying to create the GLX context.
As I have zero experience in debugging GLX applications (and OpenGL in particular) its out of my league.

That said, have you tried using proton + steam to run X2?

SCS, unlike many other game developers, continuously improve the base (read: non-DLC) game, even though their main source of income (I would imagine) is the DLCs.
Hopefully they'll never switch to the micro-transaction route.

I actually was a beta tester and owner of (the late) LGP X2 (and then X3:R).
As far as I know, LGP's X2 still can be made to work (unlike X3:R that uses some license server that no longer works).
That said, back when X3:TC was released as Windows only, I had zero issues running it under wine. As such, I would venture and guess that Steam-Proton will have zero issues running X2.

After spending months on X2, X3:R, X3:TC, X3:AP and now struggling to get used to X4 (I never really enjoyed X:R), I fully agree that X3:AP is indeed the best release.
