Some notes and benchmarks about a performance regression in Mad Max's OpenGL rendering

These results are more realistic. 2.5x performance boost is just too much for just an API switch.

Mad Max meets Vulkan in a new fully public beta for Linux, benchmarks and OpenGL vs Vulkan comparisons

I am guessing the bigger part of the performance boost is coming from the OpenGL version not being as optimized as it should. There is no way Vulkan (or any API for that matter) can make this much difference. However, this is probably an indication that it's easier to optimize the code under Vulkan than it is under OpenGL, which by itself is enough reason to introduce Vulkan. Good job Feral, and Khronos too.

NVIDIA might have more open drivers in future on Linux

Good to hear. I think they will have to start opening things if they want to remain in the lead, otherwise AMD will slowly take over.

Khronos working on an '3D Portability Initiative' to enable portable development across Vulkan, DX12 and Metal

I don't like the idea. First, we'll have an extra layer that is only needed for political reasons, not technical reasons. Second, Microsoft and Apple will still try their best to undermine this new initiate just as they are trying to undermine Vulkan so we'll still eventually end up in the same situation. The solution to this mess is in the hands of game studios; if they don't want to target multiple APIs then they can simply target Vulkan and that will allow them to run their code on all platforms (MacOS and iOS can run Vulkan using MoltenVK).

Destinations & Dota VR Hub are now available on Linux

Not easy to find someone to donate ~1000$, but if we can get 5 or 6 persons to donate 150$ each specifically for the VR we can get GOL a Vive. I'm ready to put 150$ myself. Anyone else?

SteamVR for Linux is now officially in Beta

Great to see it happen finally. But VR is very expensive for me right now :(

System76 have refreshed their most powerful Linux laptops now with 7th Gen Intel CPUs

I bought an Oryx Pro, an older release with gtx 980m. Highly recommended if you are looking for a Linux gaming PC. The specs and the customizability are great.

The price may be a bit higher than a competition with similar specs, but you won't get the same level of support, nor will you get a BIOS flashed with a more Linux compatible firmware from other vendors. I know this because at the beginning they shipped me a laptop with the incorrect firmware. Then I contacted support and they guided me through detecting BIOS version and realized their mistake, so they shipped me a replacement and carried all the shipping costs of the replacement. The minor random glitches I was seeing disappeared with the correct BIOS.

The Talos Principle has a new stable build with more Vulkan optimizations

Good to hear. Talos on Vulkan is much faster than on OGL, but still not as fast as DX.

Here’s some interesting answers from Gabe Newell and Valve from the reddit AMA

Right now Linux gaming not in the state that can be accepted by general audience. Many papercuts need to be fixed first (like Steam Runtime issues, Mesa-specific games issues, and get-this-damn-Optimus-tearfree issues, etc.) Maybe a little bit later, when new Steam Beta with Steam Runtime fixes will be pushed to stable channel, stable Ubuntu get Xorg Server 1.19 and Mesa with many game-specific fixes? Yep, I wish that happen ^_^

This is a super important point that a lot of the Linux community is completely ignoring. Other gamers are not interested in dropping to the command line and searching dozens of forum posts to get a game working. We need widespread Wayland adoption and we need a smooth Vulkan experience. Nvidia dominates Windows as well as Linux to a lesser degree in the steam surveys and their driver situation needs to get worked out for Wayland. AMD's open driver is still a work in progress and HDMI audio is a major pain point still.

That is not totally accurate. You don't need things to be perfect before you can go to market. Windows also has its own share of issues but it's working good enough and the same thing can be said about Linux if a company picks a certain setup of hardware and software. I have a System76 laptop with nVidia chipset and it's working flawlessly out of the box. Games run smooth with no tearing or other graphical issues. I never needed to drop to the command line to get a game working.
