Nvidia Video From SIGGRAPH Talks About Vulkan

Quoting: EikeI fear Vulkan will primarily be seen as a mobile API.
This fear is so far away from reality that it's even funny. :D
Windows will go with DirectX, it always did.
Apple can force whatever they like on their systems, and they already started to roll their own.
What big marktes are left - Linux or mobile?
Hmm...
Windows will have DirectX, OpenGL and Vulkan support.
Apple will have Metal, OpenGL and Vulkan support.
Linux will have OpenGL and Vulkan support.
Mobile will have OpenGL ES and Vulkan support.

Vulkan's success will be determined on how good the documentation, performance, ease-of-use, and fragmentation is.

If Vulkan can either create new features that developers want, or at least keep up with rivals new features that developers must have, then Vulkan has the potential of becoming the de-facto API.

Vulkan doesn't have the same consumer recognition compared to DirectX, but from what I've seen, developers are looking forward to trying it out.
4 important facts:
1. Apple will probably not support Vulkan in favour of Metal on both Mac and iOS/

2. Vulkan is resembles much DX12 which in turn resembles Mantle, So even if companies choose to go DX12 route, porting between the 2 should be straightforward together with SPIR-V for shading language compatibility.

3. Vulkan will have much better development tools than OpenGL could ever have. (see LunarG)

4. EA, Blizzard and others are in the Khronos Group, so expect Vulkan to be supported by them at least on Windows (which should make their games easily playable with wine).

Just my 2 cents

Is that a fact? Doesn't VP demand a lump sum upfront whereas Feral and Aspyr get a percentage of Linux sales, essentially meaning that developers and publishers don't have to pay for a Linux port and the risk lies entirely with Feral and Aspyr?
idk, it is just a thought. Since VP uses wrappers it should be theoretically cheaper for them to port a game (with worse quality though) than Feral or Aspyr,

lol i dont see many poor reviews: 1029/249 and 8.5 rating on Eurogamer, it's only the long time Codemasters fans that hated the game and don't forget we don't have many such racers on Linux...

...
We got more racers on Linux if FFB works full on all wheels.

and it needs Direct3D11 so it doesn't run through Wine (yet... probably)

...
Really? It has a fallback to DX 9. See the minimum System Requirements.
in the system requirements it says DirectX: 11, and it has DX10/GL3-capable cards as minimum requirements, though maybe you 're still right since Dirt 3 has DX9 fallback, but idk.

How many racing games on Linux have real cars and (somewhat) realistic handling??

Quoting: wojtek88Just like @tuubi I don't understand why to port DiRT Showdown If DiRT 3 is not yet ported. I play DiRT 3 on Wine and it works great except controller support. If DiRT 3 would be ported with good controller support including most popular controllers (Logitech f310, x360 controller, dualschocks) it would be a must to buy game. I would buy yet another copy just to support porting company also.
And even if DiRT 3 would run on eOn port but performance will be like on Wine but controller support will work out of the box - I would pay for it.

DiRT Showdown is in my library (it was in bundle with DiRT 2 and 3 on Humble bundle some time ago) so I will install it to test port quality. But I am not interested in a game and I will not support VP with money this time.
VP bring good DiRT 3 port to Linux!
DiRT 3 has been ported by Feral to Mac fairly recently, so they should do the Linux version, if any.

Btw. i think the decision to let VP do a Linux port is for Codemasters to test how linux sales go in a safe way (for them, since VP ports cost less),
so they see if it's worth porting DiRT 3 and/or DiRT Rally afterwards, since those games have been requested so many times...
If what You're saying is true then choosing this game to port is really wrong choice. Picking old game with poor reviews to test how good sales are sounds like conscious sabotage...

but then again i'm wrong, because they are letting Feral port Grid..., so they can test our lovely platform that way anyways :D with a much more realistic racer before SteamOS finally arrives.
