Quoting: LiamThe initial keyboard setup is terrible, you will have to rebind your keys. Move forward with Z, what? WASD or get out.
Quoting: DevlinI just bought it and tested it 5 minutes, the keyboard and mouse control that comes by default is just painful to use and doesn't work very well, I cannot understand the reasoning behind not using "standard" K&M controls like WASD for movement.
Because it's a french studio and we have AZERTY keyboards [External Link] here in France. Standard KB+M controls are ZQSD and not WASD.

So now you're getting a taste of your own medicine, when WE always have to rebind every fucking single game to ZQSD again and again (for more than 30 years I play on PC). And I don't talk about those game devs who think how futile is to let people remap keys. :><: :><: :><:

I think I need to relax a bit. ^_^
Thank you for the information, I had no idea, at least now the default key bindings make sense.

It shouldn't be too difficult to have different mappings based on the keyboard layout, but I assume that is just easier to do and test a QWERTY layout and left the configuration of other layouts to the users.

Following with the topic I have had time to test it with the gamepad (a Logitech F510) and the controls, including the camera, worked flawlessly, it's a much better experience than the K&M combo.

I will try later to play with a gamepad and hope it is a lot better than with K&M because if what I saw is how it works It will be unplayable.
Why don't you just rebind the keys?
I was testing the game to see how it worked. I plan to play it with a gamepad so no reason to invest time rebinding the keys, it was only a minor observation that they should have used a more standard layout because I started a new game and I didn't even know how to move.

Also I have the same issue as MaximB with the mouse camera:

Quoting: MaximBIs the mice buggy for you too?
every time I move it the camera goes to "bird fly" view.
And I must use it to view the road ahead and on the sides.
It just jumps all the time when I move it and tries to fight my command.
So for me K&M is not and option in its current state but it does not matter too much if gamepad works fine.

In any case, thank you to the company for the port, it's always welcome to have more companies porting games to Linux.

Valve Rep Confirms Why Some Games Have Their SteamOS Icon Removed
18 Oct 2015 at 5:03 pm UTC

It's been some years since I installed something from Steam on Windows and I don't know if it still a valid point, but on Windows when you first launch a game that had additional dependencies it launched the wizard for each one, that I could rememeber things like DirectX, .Net or VisualC runtime were installed this way if they were not already in the system.

What Steam should do is provide a similar way of installing those most common dependencies like Java. If the problem is the variety of package managers, that I assume it may be a risk, they could support only the SteamOS distribution and let other distributions manage it on their own.

On Pre-Orders And Other Nasty Buying Habits

Excellent article but as always there are exceptions. For example I was on Wastelands 2 Kickstarter, let's assume that this is some kind of preorder, because Brian Fargo was behind it and in the end I wasn't dissapointed in any way with the game, taking into consideration what they explained about it, I wasn't expecting a Witcher 3 graphics engine or anything like that. They even are giving the Director's Cut for free.

After that I have backed the new Torment and Bard's Tale games first because I love that kind of RPG classic games, and second because they have shown that they can deliver on their promises and with great results, so in a way they deserve my "investment" to publish their games.

Other publishers on that level in my list are King Art Games, with they Book of Unwritten Tales series and Battleworld Kronos, I backed them on Kickstarter and they did what they promised, so I will back their future projects, like The Dwarves that they currently have on Kickstarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kingartgames/the-dwarves-a-new-storydriven-fantasy-rpg [External Link] (Sorry for the advertisment :) ) And also Obsidian with Pillars of Eternity, if they do a Kickstarter or a Preorder for the second part I will back them, if the game has Linux support, of course.

On the other hand there are publishers like Larian that after Original Sin, which I also backed, won't received a cent from my wallet in the future until they release something that works on Linux. Leason learned here.

Pillars Of Eternity 2.0 & Expansions Announced, Looking Great

A company that listens to its customers. Companion AI and individual stealth mode are great additions to the game, the only main thing that I'm missing now is companions history depth, some of them are so limited that they could have let them out and nothing would have been lost, the one for Pallegrina is specially ridiculous.

Larian Studios Working On A New Game While Divinity: Original Sin Is Still Not On Linux

Quoting: rustybroomhandleGeez man, don't frame it like some kind of grand scandal that they are working their next game. :/

They are working on a new game, using the same engine. The engine porting is what's being worked on for Linux. Them working on a separate game does not get in the way of the porting. Yes, it's taking a long time, but as it has been said - they are new to this, and having a more portable engine will help future ports.
The issue that I have with that is that they said the same about Dragon Commander, that the Linux version will be available once the engine was ported during Original Sin development, and now we know what has happened with that promise.

So if they are working on a new game and say once again that they will port the engine while programming the new game and then create Original Sin Linux version no one should believe them until they show something real and not only good intentions.

And I say all that as a backer of the game and seeing it sitting on my Steam library unplayed. Fortunately lately there have been other great RPGs with Linux support such as Shadowrun, Wastelands 2 or Pillars of Eternity, and hopefully we will also have the new Witcher, those companies will get my money in the future something Larian won't until I saw the Linux version release and with proper support.

VoidExpanse Space Sandbox RPG Released For Linux, Some Thoughts
5 Apr 2015 at 1:26 pm UTC

Quoting: Bumadarnot sure how they can make the start more user friendly. It's not like windows where package A can install package B (mono in this case) without the user even knowing. root access to the package manager (apt or zypper or any other) is needed and the linux way is to tell the user and leave it at that.
I don't know how it is distributed but there are other games that use Unity and Mono and they don't require to install it in the system, for example yesterday I bought War for the Overworld, it's also a Unity and Mono game, and it just works without having mono in the system.

What they can do is at least show an error informing that mono is required because right now, without mono, when you click play on Steam it just closes, and if you go directly to the executable it starts (I can see the company and game logos) but then just tells you to go to Steam and start the game from there.

Larian Studios Detail Why The Linux Port Of Divinity Is Taking So Damn Long
15 Mar 2015 at 10:46 am UTC Likes: 3

I backed the project because they promised a Linux version, I have the game in my Steam library but I'm still waiting to play it. I understand the reasons that they are giving now, but they could have given them a year ago.

It seems clear to me that the Linux port was an afterthought without any planning behind it, maybe its not lying to the backers but as a customer I feel a bit deceived by its promised support.
