Wine 2.0 is now officially available

I'm impressed with all of the Wine improvements over the years. They should get some serious money from Valve. If it comes to me all games prior Vulkan could be using Wine, and post Vulkan native. I think that would be most efficient way to bring all the games out there. Also if Valve would integrate Wine into Steam somehow it would be nice if they did an interface for developers for easier interaction between companies that want to make and the ones that want to outsource the porting, for instance big I WANT PORT button ;)

Exclusive: Civilization VI now fully confirmed to be coming for SteamOS & Linux and soon too

Good to hear but Civ 6 is not a great game at the moment. Considering very high price and DLC spamming one should really consider waiting another 2 years and get the whole package on a discount. People that bought digital deluxe edition that gives the rights to download the next 4 DLCs for free are screwed as already 2 of them are released, vikings scenarios and Poland as a nation. As much as I would like to play as Poland it's not justifiable to pay 5 euros for the DLC, not to mention the viking stuff. I'm less than impressed Firaxis.

Rich Geldreich, a former Valve developer, has an interesting blog post about Valve supporting Linux and OpenGL

So basically Linux support is a scarecrow now. They've put it on a life support and they are throwing bits and pieces at us to keep the crowd satisfied but they won't bring out the big guns because they don't want to go to a war with Microsoft. So unless Microsoft decides to push the store or seal the PC environment around Windows whatever that means there won't be a big Linux push. Some of the people might migrate but it won't ever be more that few % without drastic Microsoft moves. Also SteamOS would be more of a thing if it happened few years ago when people were dissatisfied with Vista, then 8 and when you actually had to pay for Windows. With 10 you just download ISO from the Microsoft website and off you go. With or without a license, it works anyway. Good enough for most of the people I guess. So this is it guys, if you think 2016 was good then hold on to it because all the subsequent years will be the same. Similar marketshare, similar amount of games released, similar treatment by developers unless they come to a conclusion that Linux port only pays the bills and it's not viable. Maybe Valve would be more successful with ReactOS lol.

I will be looking for some 4X games. Currently I'm enjoying Stellaris while I'd like to pick up two copies of Master of Orion.

Aspyr Media seem positive about Civilization VI for Linux according to their recent tweet

Quoting: killyouIf it's going to perform as the Mac version then they shouldn't even bother. My Lenovo T440s with HD4000 integrated GPU can handle Civ6 better than my mid-2014 Macbook Pro with Intel Iris. Did I mention that the only resolution available on the MBP is 1280x800? On the other hand Civ 5 on the very same MBP works flawlessly on max details.
Macs are terrible gaming computers.
It's a port issue, not a computer issue.

I don't care what it is as long as it works. I wish for more WINE ports of the older games.

Aspyr Media are reminding Linux gamers not to give up hope on Civilization VI

I bought it and I should've waited. Civ 5 is probably more enjoyable right now. I can't get into the new graphics style either. I wish the strategic view which I'm mostly using looked like this: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/lENtdImXgkE/maxresdefault.jpg [External Link]. Instead I feel like playing Travian through the web browser.

There were just too many issues with drivers when Valve started the whole linux and SteamOS thing... They did however put pressure on the manufacturers so now we have comparable graphics drivers to Windows. The second problem was OpenGL that was never really meant for game producing and now Vulkan is here... It was the right moment to start the revolution but it was obvious that it would take time. Now things are slowly getting there comparable to Windows performances and similar possibilities for devs and they will eventually start pushing Linux gaming again I believe. With their help and if there were a few more companies like them and FeralInteractive and doing some Wine wrappers for all games bellow DX9 that don't yet have native linux versions gamers could be brought to Linux very quickly.

I do hope that we will be getting some love from aspyr again with the new borderlands and Civ VI :)
Let's hope so. In the mean time I will be occupied with X-COM Enemy Unknown which I started to play after hearing the bad news about Civ6 to cheer me up. Now I know I'll be getting X-COM 2 so maybe that's for the best!
