Talking Point: how about a monthly Steam Game Pass from Valve

Quoting: slaapliedjeThe interesting thought about this, is even if they honor this, and disable periodic checks, any of the games that warn about 3rd party DRM would probably be unplayable.
3rd party as in not Steam/Valve? Why would Steam shutting down affect those?
I could totally see all the keys becoming invalid.

Quoting: EMO GANGSTERI'm starting to think the reason epic is spending so much money and losing profits so much Is that they're trying to get bought out for big money later, I hope I'm wrong.
They already have big money, they are not an empty startup like say Twitter or Discord that earns no money, so I doubt that.
it would be kinda hilarious if apple out of all companies end up purchasing then (after they were sued by epic)
Would be an interesting way to get out of a lawsuit, just buy them!
actually that may be illegal.
if they get away with that move, then other companies will sue then since they didnt proved that they were right
Yeah, I suspect it is illegal. Would be scary if that is how lawsuits like this ended. "Fine, we'll just buy you." "wait, what?"

Kind of reminds me of Curb Your Enthusiasm where he opens a Spite Store...

Quoting: HoriAnd yes, I know Steam says they will take care of it if it comes to that, but that means absolutely zero. Not only do they not give any details at all, but with such a sensitive topic, they would have to give a VERY detailed description of what would happen to even begin to trust that would actually happen when it comes to it and are not just empty words.
No matter how much you trust Steam now, when/if it comes to it shutting down, you can't just rely on it on such a promise anymore, especially so if it's a vague promise from so long ago it's probably the same age as most of its users are.

Not that I see Valve dying or killing off Steam anytime soon. The store is a freaking goldmine.

I keep seeing these random videos thinking the 'SteamPal' (hope they name that something cooler, though Neptune was a doomed Sega Console) that it was going to be a Tablet, and no one would want to play their Steam games on it... are they insane? If there were a dockable handhold game syatem I could play my giant Steam library on... I would be all over that!

When they start with the first gen and start releasing updates to them, it could be way sweet! But yes, absolutely would need an Offline mode (or a cheap 5G sim in it!)

UK-based Entroware launch the Poseidon desktop with 11th Generation Intel CPUs

Quoting: PublicNuisanceI am actually fine with them only having an Intel GPU as that works better on FLOSS distros anyway. With so many manufacturers to choose from offering Linux support for their computers it is tough to say I would choose Entroware though.

At this point Purism; System76; Star Labs all offer core boot options on some of their systems. Retro Freedom; Vikings and Techoethical offer me Libreboot. Think Penguin tests their systems on FLOSS distros such as Trisquel so I know they work with that. Raptor Computing and SiFive offer me non X86 options such as Risc-V and Power9. Framework offers me the ability to swap dongles. Entroware doesn't offer me any of those which leaves them in no mans land for me.
I seriously would love a Power9 system, they are just a but too expensive for my tastes...

I have a Fractal Design Define R6. Love the case, best I have ever owned!

Hints appear of Valve making a handheld Steam "SteamPal" Neptune console

Quoting: MalFunny thing. Everyone is 100% sure consoles are sold at loss, nobody challenge this accepted fact. Yet in EpicVSApple Epic couldn't provide any piece of evidence or even some clue that this is a fact, despite this being a fundamental piece of its theory and despite having both Sony and M$ support. This at least should suggest something on consoles real manufacturing costs.
I've always questioned this. Most people don't realize the cost of materials significantly drops when millions are ordered. With just about every console maker just making deals with AMD, it's hard not to think that they're making some serious amounts of bank, and that there's a good mark-up on things.

Quoting: elmapuli dont think the average joe would give a second chance to valve, imagine knowing the disaster it was the last time and beting your money at it?
The average joe does not remember what happened two years ago, much less as far back as the Steam Machine is now. Otherwise the state of politics would be very different.
With how much advertising and availability for the Steam Machines, I don't think the average joe even knew about it.

I bet more average people have heard of the Atari VCS!

Quoting: SupayWould a device with swappable controller bits work? Like a way to have the section where a D pad/stick would go instead be able to have it unclipped and fitted with a physical D pad or stick or the touchpad like the Steam controller or potentially even something else. Customise the controller setup to your preference.
Like the Thrustmaster eSwap Pro?

Quoting: GuestI for one would be interested in such a thing if it was reasonably priced and had a nice battery life. On the other hand if it's 'play Cyberpunk 2077' on a handheld it's probably not for me, but i'd like to play Dead Cells and the like on the go.

It would be also cool if they kept it open like SteamOS (with a debian based system perhaps) so you could install Retroarch etc. on it or use it as a pdf reader.
I mean you can kind of already play Dead Cells on the Switch...

Quoting: TheSHEEEPWell, it does seem to be a more promising idea than the Steam Machine.
And game support is certainly WAY better now via Proton than it used to be many years ago.

On the other hand, I don't really know if there is a market for such a handheld.
I wish them good luck, anyway.
I would buy the shit out of this if it worked like the Switch.
