Sony to officially support the PS5 DualSense on Linux with a new driver

The PS5 controller is certainly a sharp looking piece of gear and attractively priced. The only thing I don't like about it is the placement of the sticks. I think Nintendo and Microsoft got it right with offset joystick placement.
Ha, that's as a divisive thing as what political party you follow. My brain prefers the parallel sticks. Then again, now you can get sticks where you can swap them on the fly (like the eSwap Pro that I own).

Cooler Master and KFC team up to create a 'console' PC and now I've seen everything
28 Dec 2020 at 5:25 pm UTC

Quoting: dannielloHmmm... I think that they missed the point. "Real" PC game console (Linux or Windows - do not matter) - will be too expensive for "average" KFC consumer.

But... Some potato based PC could be quite affordable (for example based on Raspberry Pi). What is needed? Computer capable enough to start browser - so almost everything nowadays. Unfortunately streaming services like GeForce NOW and Stadia require commercial, proprietary and spying Chrome browser. License for installing Chrome could be probably quite expensive if Google realizes that they could earn on it - probably they will force manufacturer to use not Linux but fully optimized for Google "telemetry" ChromeOS or Android.... Open-source Chromium could be the solution...

Raspberry Pi could handle start some old console emulators plus some small indie games "natively" on Linux. All other AAA games - access via streaming services like GeForce NOW website.
So far I'm liking my Atari VCS that is a lot more powerful than a RPi and can run (secure boot signed) Linux's. I've asked if there is a way to unlock the secure boot to get GamerOS on it. But until then, may need to create a Debian set up that is similar (basically SteamOS with newer base). Anyone want to help with the preseed config? :)

Sony to officially support the PS5 DualSense on Linux with a new driver
28 Dec 2020 at 5:17 pm UTC

Quoting: The_Aquabatnah I think they are making this driver for the Chromebooks, there is a huge market on Chromebooks in the US and now you can game on those with Stadia. Chromebooks is still Linux.
But how likely is it that Chromebooks get brand spanking new kernels? Sure Google could back port them, but why would Sony specifically try to give Google money? Plus Stadia comes with it's own controllers?

Quoting: slaapliedjeThis makes me wonder if they're planning on releasing some native games on their own for Linux.
This is certainly possible and perhaps even likely. Otherwise, you're correct, supporting Linux just to sell a few more controllers doesn't make a lot of sense. Unless Linux is their development platform, and it literally costs them nothing extra to release a Linux driver.
Their development being possible on MS / Linux makes the most sense, actually. Guess the real question is, is this driver also going to be created for the BSDs?

I mean the fact that Steam no longer has it's own controller being made.. and that the DS5 has some very special features, I think Sony's idea would be to get support in some PC games so that people will want to buy these controllers for all their gaming needs. If they get special support, it's a form of lock-in if you think about it. And I know at least for me, if there is some weird gimmick in a controller, I'll probably end up buying it, as I like oddball controllers! Hell, I bought one of these! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbdgIktZaGY [External Link]

Sony to officially support the PS5 DualSense on Linux with a new driver

Quoting: whizseIntriguing! Pretty cool to see support from Sony themselves, or did they already support the DS4 in a similar way and I missed that fact?

As long as the trigger and haptics stuff lands I'll probably grab one too.
I actually think they did, but they decided to create a new driver for the DS5.

This makes me wonder if they're planning on releasing some native games on their own for Linux. How cool would that be. Otherwise, are they doing it to sell more controllers? I'd buy one if it had great Linux support, yet at the same time it'll probably be a year or more before I buy a PS5.

Edit: This means if I had a PS5 controller and Atari updates the kernel on the Atari VCS, I could use the controller there (the PS4 controller works flawlessly there). Granted I actually do really like the Atari controllers as well.)

Side note. You can copy games from the VCS to a USB drive and run them on Linux.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI will say that probably my favorite overall anesthetic is the Sega Genesis.
Unless you've trouble sleeping, I'm assuming you meant aesthetic. I thank you for the typo though, needed the chuckle today.

So while I'm at it, because quite frankly it's an awesome typo, I think a few puns are in order:

A console anaesthetic (alt. spelling anesthetic), to dull the pain of playing a terrible game.
A console anaesthetic, for when you just need to space out for a while.
A console anaesthetic, for major surgery required when that drive gets stuck and you need to remove a cd/dvd.

Please add some more.
Ha, writing on my phone, after a lovely night of drinking.

Cheers!

Guess what game this is.
Skyrim.
Since it's been released on almost everything, it's not totally unbelievable that Bethesda would eventually release Skyrim for DOS. But still not Linux.
Haha, sad but true. Maybe we can get it ported to the Atari VCS. It technically runs Linux... but then most non-MS consoles run a form of BSD and yet Skyrim doesn't run on all BSDs...

Dude, this thing is so very pretty... Atari Consoles [External Link]
十人十色 I guess. I don't like the "oddly shaped black box" aesthetic.
Ha, as opposed to some of the other consoles that have come out over the years? I will say that probably my favorite overall anesthetic is the Sega Genesis. It is what a game console should look like. The moment that they all started to require some sort of active cooling, I think companies screwed up. Consoles should be 100% silent. The Atari VCS is close, but does have a fan that randomly likes to turn on. Hopefully fixed in software before a more general release.

Plague Inc: The Cure DLC coming in early 2021 and free until COVID-19 is under control

Quoting: slaapliedjeAgreed. My only point was that China used to be isolationist. https://www.gavinmenzies.net/ [External Link] has some interesting books about why / when they became that way. But for sure, not now. Don't have any other explanation to why it works that way in the game. Bug?
Ah, fair enough, apologies if I misinterpreted you. I think Plague Inc. actually does have pretty good models when looking at single countries, it's just in the "country to country spread" that I feel like their models are less-than-realistic based on what we've seen over the past year. But maybe I just have bad luck getting my pathogens to spread.
Ha, yeah I think the best spread method is to have it infect birds. It definitely is an interesting strategy game, I should play it some more.

For sure China isn't isolationist anymore, they basically make everything for the world at this point, and then copy and sell designs locally to themselves (and others). Crazy how much the world now depends on their factories.
