Atari VCS seeing supply shortages, not expecting full production until early 2021

Atari VCS (202x) can Stream games!
Atari 8bit (1978) w/ FujiNet can also stream games!

8bit has a cartridge port and SIO port for adding peripherals.
VCS only has USB ports, and network. Lacks cartridge port or even optical drive.

8bit you can own your games! Like really own them, not licensed.
VCS as far as we know only 'officially' has streaming services where you don't actually own anything beyond the hardware.

8bit has a keyboard (arguably the 400s keyboard is terrible).
VCS could add one via USB.

8bit has shitloads of games and software!
VCS is an unknown at this time (though potentially a lot out of the box)

So far, I am thinking the Atari 8bit line of computers wins. :p

Quoting: dubigrasuI would buy it for sure, it looks nice (at least in the pictures) is running Linux and seems overall a cool piece of hardware...but all this flies out of the windows when I look at the price.
I'll write a review if I ever get mine. Maybe I'll make a comparison to my 800xl :P
Heh I've not dug out my 800XL for a while - maybe this is the weekend for it! I'd love of those units just for novelty of having a new Atari - but not at that price!
Get a FujiNet,those things are AWESOME!

Quoting: ShmerlYou could use dxvk without Wine, yes. But it's still wrapping, not a fully native renderer. That's why Feral ones aren't really native either.

By native renderer I mean one that doesn't need translating DX abstractions into Vulkan ones (on whatever stage, at compile time, at runtime etc.).
So, from your definition if I develop something and use SDL as my graphic API I don't have a native game in any platform as I'm using a wrapper for all of them?
I wouldn't think SDL is a wrapper. Isn't SDL basically DirectX for non-Windows platforms? (at least that's how I always viewed it. Just an API with a stack for input, graphical output, etc). Just like DirectX.

Ha, the argument of native vs not is kind of like the argument between FPGA and Emulation. There is a difference to a point, but when you think of it all as 'x86 compatible code' then yeah it's all native in that respect.

Quoting: MaathI purchased an Udoo Bolt Gear. That plus an M.2 SSD and RAM cost $420 if I remember correctly. I installed Kodi, but I use it to launch into Steam big picture mode mostly. It works quite well. There's some difficulty in getting games to work with a controller if they're designed for keyboard and mouse, but that's a general problem.

I think for any games that don't run well I can just use Steam Link from my main desktop.
I have been looking at one of those Ryzen mini-PCs. That'd be sweet to throw GamerOS onto...

Quoting: dubigrasuThat doesn't mean they are not Linux ports, hope we don't start again with the conspiracies.
I imagine is somethings analogue with Feral's Linux ports, they have their inside tech (Indirectx, which is also using its own caches) to translate directx to vulkan, and these guys are using dxvk instead, which is why is mentioned in the actual game credits.
As long as we consider Feral ports "native" I suppose Metro ports are also "native".

(btw, Watch Dogs Legion and Sekiro were just released on Stadia)
That sounds to me that they're basically running Proton/Wine, so you'd argue that Proton is as native as say Tomb Raider that Feral added direct Vulkan support to, vs Stadia using DXVK?

If indeed they are running it through a Wine based wrapper, that'd make sense why we STILL do not have a Native Metro Exodus!

Well they won't. How about I stand on principle and refuse to do my job?
I keep meaning to test Calamus SL's ability to import and export PDFs to see if I can use it to edit. Granted it's not exactly a Linux native application, it's actually written for the Atari ST and uses an embedded emulator for Windows, and it works perfectly in Wine.

You can now order a PC case that looks like the classic Commodore 64

Quoting: ValckRegarding desktop cases, it may be a bit of a stretch... but I use a 4U 19" server case as my "desktop", with another 2U fuse-and-switch panel below; gives a nice bit of height to the monitor. Probably not going to win any design awards, but it is functional and definitely not cramped inside the case :)

I don't get why people would want to use the 64's keyboard layout, as well as its form factor which doesn't allow to rest your wrists properly? Unless they intend to use the x86 as an emulator and want it to look the part too.
Yeah, for me if I'm going to emulate, I'm going to want the original keyboard layout and such. Try to make it as accurate as possible. But then the c64 is one of those that I didn't grow up with and wondered why they only have two arrow keys with modifiers to go the opposite direction... it's terrible. I grew up with the Atari 8bit, which had proper arrow keys :P
Heh, I grew up with a ZX81 which didn't even have keys at all :D
But that allowed me to convert it into The World's First Portable Computer™, fit snugly inside my breakfast box with the key membrane on the outside, reducing the case size to half. It was easily powered by a 9V block battery, at least for a few minutes. Of course entirely pointless without a battery powered TV set, which back then were more expensive than gold, and just as rare :)
I wish I had taken pictures, but again, we had to use real photographic film, and everything around that was expensive, too, at least for a twelve-year-old. And of course I wish I had kept it, instead of trading it with a friend for some other junk...

Ah, those were the times, when we had to walk to school uphill, both ways, in the snow. Every day of the week.
Ha, it would be fun to get an old portable TV and make a battery pack for an old 8bit and play around.

Complete side note, yesterday I finally got around to playing around with an Atari 800XL + the new FujiNet device. Turn on the computer, input the Wifi info, and you can download disk / cart images directly off the internet and run them on the system! Someone even wrote a COVID graph program from it that gather live data.

Sniper Elite 4 is good nazi killing fun, I did finally beat the game. Sadly I could never get it to work through Proton.
