Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition continues advancing, cross-play with consoles now up

https://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/neverwinter-nights-enhanced-edition [External Link] does list cross-platform multiplayer. Guess I'll find out today when I get it for the PS4. I can't get my Switch to connect to my network correctly, so am waiting on the USB ethernet adapter to test that out. Will report back my findings if PS4 - Switch - Linux can all play in the same game :)

Ha, that went there quick....

The funny thing about copyright / age. Sometimes it is about trends that can't be foreseen.
Let's take Nintendo for example, since this is the topic of this thrread. There is a site I use to update my MAME collection. MAME of course has a policy of not emulating anything newer than 15(?) years. But this same site for a long time would not allow posts of Nintendo or Sony torrents. Because they are the companies that actively go after sites. But companies like Sega, Atari, Commodore (well of course some are extinct) don't go sue happy. But for a short time there, they announced that they could finally host up to the SNES and PS1. But later recanted that.
My theory was that Nintendo saw and Sony saw that there is not only a market for 'retro' gaming, but that it is a HUGE market. So again curbed the distribution of old games.

Now, the funny thing here is Sega. All of their systems images are easily found. Yet they very successfully sell the Genesis collection, and even sell select remastered Sega Master System games on the Nintendo Switch.
It is the whole argument of 'would people buy these games if they were made commercially available again for new systems?' Yes. 'Would people just download them and play them in emulators?' Also yes. Now while they don't make money from the latter choice, not everyone wants to muck around with RetroArch, or other emulators, where a lot of times they are not 100%
The really fun things are the 'hardware' emulators, like the N64 one where it has as good as compatibility as Mupen64, which isn't the best around.
Even Sony realized they could make a little cash based on PS1-3 games on PSN. I don't think piracy really cuts into their profits as much as most people think they do.
Actually I wonder if a study has ever been done on if DRM is more expensive to publishers than loss from piracy.... because like any other middleware, I am sure various copy protection methods cost money.

I tried doing that in Docker long ago and I couldn't get the main campaign to work. Perhaps that's by design...? I was trying to use assets from my Steam game folder.
If I recall, you had to feed the cd key to it way back when. Not sure about the Enhanced Edition.

Quoting: cere4lI'm a bit on the fence about this one, strangely enough I have no issues with emulation, or with paid games.. and yet it seems so odd to have to pay for what is effectively.. pure piracy in 99% of the usecases if not more.
I get what you're saying, but the whole paying for Early Access to new features is really just a way of supporting the developers of the emulator a little more. It's tough work for sure and all the code ends up open source anyway.

I wouldn't conflate emulation with piracy like that though. There's tons of legitimate use cases of emulation.
Development for games being a huge one. Shout out to the Stella developers, who I know visit this site. I am sure many Atari 2600 homebrews exist because of that emulator.

I guess that largely depends on Sony...
Sony have kind of been jerks about that, though I think DC Universe by them is one of the few truly cross platform games. But I know there have been others which should have been cross platform, but were not on Sony Systems.
It's definitely not all games. I remember playing against PSN players in Rocket League WAY back while I was on PC.

Anymore they are all basically just computers, which is why we see so many PC ports to the various consoles. It isn't quite like it used to be where they had completely different hardware. Even the Switch is just an nVidia Shield with cool controllers and a different OS.

Quoting: oldrocker99I've been playing NWN since 2002, first on WinXP, then the only purchasable game I had which ran on Linux, since 2008, with its still-working Linux client.

I was only too happy to purchase another copy of the game I probably have played more hours than any other game (the Dominions series is the only other contender) from Beamdog, and their devotion to the game and to their customers puts them at the tippy-top of my list of favorite game developers.

I've never even played MP, and there are lots of current PW servers.

I have always called NWN "The Most Game You Can Get In A Box," and the hundreds of free high-quality adventures and mods have kept this game alive.:woot:
What is weird is I also bought it direct from them, but can no longer get their client to run. Not sure what is causing their AppImage to fail, but it is a good thing I got a Steam key from them. (This is the single most purchased game of mine. Having personally bought close to 10 copies of it over the years for various friends and family.

Here is hoping the PS4 version gives us cross platform play, because I don't want to buy a Seitch and the game for my Brother too haha

According to Newsweek, D&D is all about the sex Dungeons.

I decided GOG should be dead to me as a Linux user until they can work out that we also should be getting automatic updates. Over the long weekend I went to play Battletech, had seen the new DLC onsale on GOG and figured I would snag it there instead of Steam. Not only did I have to re-download the whole game, but also an individual 1mb file for each DLC. Talk about annoying.

Damnit, I totally just ordered it for PS4 for my brother and I, hoping I could host a server on my Linux box and play on the consoles (I also had pre-ordered it for the Switch.)

Any news on if/when PS4 will get cross platform play?

Yeah, why on earth did they choose Unity over something more lightweight, and with a more liberal license?
It's what all the cool kids use!
