Space combat sim Hypergate released on Steam with Linux support, some thoughts

Quoting: iiariAs a big space gamer, I've spent a quick 15 or so minutes with Instant Action, and so far I'd say Liam's impressions are spot on. This feels kind of what lower-end, more simplistic space action titles were like back in, say, the late 80s's or early 90's, before X-Wing and Freespace 1 and 2 changed everything. It feels retro in that way, more like a Wing Commander or a Skyfox on the Amiga [External Link]. Just jump in and blast stuff. 11 or 12 year old me would have adored this game. Much older me, ah, well... Not everyone wants to devote dozens of hours and map a hotas to make basic progress like in a X4 or Helium Rain. And even in an Everspace (a dramatically better and prettier example of the "just blast it" genre), not everyone wants rogue-lite dynamics or learn research or weapons trees. At the end of the day, it's like $10, and for jumping in a blasting fun, well, that's up to the individual. If you feel modern space action games are too complex with their realistic flight engines and layers of complexity, you might enjoy this. Graphics are servicable, sound is honestly disappointing. Flight dynamics are a bit weird, with auto aim and auto horizon leveling (why?). Again, it's your $10.
After just hopping around systems in Elite:Dangerous in VR, I was hoping this would be a more serious space sim. I still need to give Helium Rain some play time. Elite has a good default setup for my x52 Pro, does Helium Rain?

Valve have one more Steam Play update out before the end of 2018 with 3.16-6

Yeah, not sure why Dota was mentioned, since it is native. If you are into MMOs, Star Trek Online I found to be fun (and I don't really like most MMOs.)

Need to try LEGO Super Heroes 2 again to see if the sound effects are still missing. Weird that the voices and music are there, but no sound effects.

Quoting: slaapliedjeSweet, did they fix it so it doesn't crash when I start it?
How would anyone besides you know? You haven't provided any information about the crash.
The answer is yes.

I posted this while I was at work and only now got time to test. The crash literally was that it wouldn't start, and it gave no output. Yup, just as useful as my post was.

Quoting: slaapliedjeWeird, my GTA V install is in a forever 'validating' loop today. Anyone else seen something similar?
Yes, I have had that a couple of times recently. The first time was resolved by moving the game from an NTFS formatted disk to an ext4 disk, but recently Civ VI also went into an update loop. I have deleted Civ VI for now, as I am expecting to move games to a new larger SSD soon, but Civ VI was also on NTFS, so that may also be the problem there.
Huh, nope mine is already on an ext4 SSD partition.

Quoting: slaapliedjeI have considered getting this for the Switch, just because it is portable. Really wish something like the SMACH-Z would come out so I could play Steam games on a portable.
The Switch version is awesome. It's not a stripped down port but the full game, feature-for-feature identical to the PC version, and it runs great. I highly recommend it.
The main concern I have for it is the expansions. It hasn't been announced that they will get Rise and Fall, or the new one with Canada coming out.

If they also added DRM-free to it...

I think one of the biggest reason Steam is so successful though is their sales are insane.

Dragonlance! Check it out if you enjoy fantasy. :)
The book where he gets pulled into Ravenloft was amazing.
Dragons of a Vanished Moon is a great closure, imo, to this character.
I should read the newer Dragonlance books, I mostly stopped after the short stories about the Companions kids.
