More of such articles, thanks to both to developers for supporting SteamOS/Linux platform and to GoL to make this interview happen.

Star Citizen update, they are considering Vulkan

CIG has been going back and forth regarding Linux support, so I would be very cautious with buying into what they say. However, they finally got some Linux devs in house and CryEngine started to work on port too. There's hope, but we will see in time.

Quoting: maodzedunI think they're still a bit cautious about performance gains and ease of use. DirectX 12 has more or less an year head start and most developers now have an idea what they're getting into with it, as well as what performance benefits they can reap. Yet, it was just recently that some admitted DX12 turned out to be much harder to implement than expected. In that sense, Vulkan has been available to developers for a much shorter period. The only working example we have at this point is a performance regression in the Talos Principle.
Also, while Vulkan can technically work across all platforms, don't forget most already have their own API. Windows and Xbox have DirectX and Sony have their own close to the metal API for the PS (can't remember the name). It's not like developers will swarm to drop everything and start implementing a new untested and unproven API. Them being cautious is only natural and the truth is Vulkan has to prove itself. Cross platform compatibility is nice but that alone is hardly a selling point. OpenGL is also cross platform :))).
DirectX12 API is also untested and unproven, also all major engines had access to Vulkan API all this time. Majority of the games use one or another off-the-shelf engine which will support Vulkan in nearest future. Trust me, DirectX12 won't be roadblock for porting games to Linux, we have laundry list with other items to clear. It is not Vulkan vs. DirectX12, it is all nagging issues with drivers, etc. They are partially solved, but we are not there yet.

Disclaimer: I am very skeptical about CIG and way they handle SC project. However I expect game to fare rather well, although I prefer way ED is designed.

I hink this is really good news. SC is very graphically demanding game and everything they can do to run it with less overhead of OpenGL driver is seen as plus. Considering CryEngine would heavily benefit from having Vulkan support.

Let's see how this unfolds.

But as regarding these bad posts it is worth politely contact media and inform them if they got something wrong.

The most famous french video game website also just released an article about how "failure steam is with linux". Claiming that it's not going well at all and will disappear.
Do you think microsoft is getting major video game medias to give a bad image of steamOS ? :þ
Microsoft is well known for handing out PR money to sink competition. It is nothing new, especially regarding Linux. However you also must consider that huge part of so called "journalists" are just Windows users, and are ignorant as hell. They just don't know anything better so don't even have to be paid to paint bad image of Valve Linux strategy.

Half-Life 3 if it comes could have some extra things for SteamOS - similar to collection edition, etc. However I don't believe Valve specially plans for these things and Half-Life 3 is still somehow a inception, although I believe they are working on it (or at least they are propping up Source 2 engine for it).

They dont see this? Are they blind?
I think it is worth when do reporting provide these numbers, and give approximate number of Linux players, not percentages.

Quoting: CaldazarI kind of gave up on the pure concentration on those percentages. Partly because they are indeed underwhelming, let's face it, but more importantly, because I don't think anymore that they count for much right now.

While Steam is doing its thing, me and my Linux gaming machines went from being the butt of jokes to being a viable alternative in case Microsoft screws up. That is true with my friends as well as gaming community boards. No one is laughing anymore because half of them actually tried it.

And exactly this new first hand experience is what isn't represented with those percentages. "It's way easier than I thought" is a typical reaction of those who dipped their toe into the water for the first time.

They still use Windows of course, because for gaming it still is the better alternative. But they all know Linux is there and ready when they need it.
So does Steam, and I think that is the point of it all.
Very good side note there. Linux/SteamOS being *viable* alternative is what Valve and gaming community needs. We have time to get this right, no need for panic. +1

So strap on, review games, recommend good games, report bugs and provide good criticism to developers and get ecosphere going. Linux is not going away as gaming platform. It will only get better. Case closed.
