Also wasn't Kingdom Come Linux port called into question?

Quoting: berillionsAnd if it's not cancelled we will have Homefront and Kingdom Come with OpenGL when Windows will have these games with Dx12...It is assuming Vulkan support doesn't come later. Vulkan was just released, I expect it to be patched in during this year.
IT'S A BIG SHIT !!!

Also consider this that majority of devs using Unity aren't that keen to improve it at source code level - usually due of lack of resources.

Quoting: KristianSo UE4 offers source code access, Lumberyard offers source code access, CryEngine V (a name that cries out for Vulkan support) offers source code access, Godot is FLOSS licensed and yet despite all of this you have to pay big bucks for the source code to Unity? How valuable do the folks at Unity think their source code is?Considering it being behind all major indie releases in past years, I think they have some reason to think highly about themselves.

Game is on :) But frankly, this is very, very good for game development. I can see everyone benefiting from this.

Quoting: berillionsNo Vulkan for the CryEngine...To be fair only CryEngine version considering Vulkan is CIG one (Star Citizen).

Those articles and notes is MS PR BS as they want everyone to force to upgrade to Windows 10. Their previous Windows versions have turned out strong competition against themselves. All their plans are tied up everyone running Windows 10.
Nice to see AMD come back swinging. Yes, careful to be very optimistic but at least they move in right direction.

How big is Linux gaming? Some estimates

Excellent analysis with limited information we have. Vulkan *will* help a great deal, it will decrease cost of porting for devs thus unlocking SteamOS/Linux market. I don't expect world shattering increase of market share, however I expect increase in sales numbers as ports gets better. I believe XCOM2 sales numbers alone could tell us a great deal how big active Linux gamer base is.
As for recent incredible increase of Steam users - games just gets more and more accessible and that's most likely thanks to small indie games...not AAA publishers. GTA5 and Witcher 3 alone could be reason for additional users. XBO turned out to be turd and most likely lot of people switched either to Windows or PS4.

I would like to defend AMD and Canonical's decision here. First of all, it is not very logical to offer fglrx for 16.04, considering these things a) you can get supported Ubuntu LTS from 14.04 with proper fglrx support and it will last for additional 3 years b) 16.04 sports Xorg 1.18 which isn't supported by fglrx anyway c) huge amdgpu restruct going on.
Just don't throw yourself under the bus using newest LTS for some time and you will be fine. All power to AMD Linux team, because situation was dire and they are clearly doing good work cleaning this up, moving display stuff to kernel side and planning to beefing up RadeonSI and adding Vulkan to all this. Actually this makes me very hopeful that I might buy AMD for my graphics upgrade again.

Discoveribility has been solved long time ago - on Ubuntu at least, and it's derivatives. RedHat won't do it because of not being easily to offer packages of third parties, but also never aimed to be super user friendly.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIt should be different because when you're using the package manager you have to know what you're looking for. Way too easy for someone not knowledgeable about such things to either fail to find drivers in the package manager app, or find the wrong one. I don't mind the idea of it being in there, but that shouldn't be the primary method--there should be something in the hardware management side that says "This is what you want! Graphics card driver, over here!" Something that's discoverable even if you're not thinking specifically about drivers for your graphics card but are only dissatisfied with how the graphics are running and noodling around vaguely in the available management apps trying to figure out if anything can be done about that. You know, what Ubuntu did in first hand 10 years ago with their 'there's special driver for your hardware' dialog? Which still appears if you have AMD or Nvidia card?
Which, as I noted above, current version of Linux Mint totally does.
