Nvidia release Linux beta driver with Vulkan
17 Feb 2016 at 9:16 am UTC

Quoting: SabunI am severely disappointed. Vulkan is AMD's brainchild. They have no excuse to be behind this time.

It looks like they didn't even have a contingency plan (proprietary driver). Now I cannot trust them when they say they might be able to support 300 series cards and older with AMDGPU. Vulkan was supposed to be supported via their proprietary driver, yet here we are with nothing.

Why does it matter if AMDGPU supports more than just GCN 1.2? Vulkan support is tied to AMDGPU now apparently.
According to devs they never said AMDGPU supports only GCN 1.2/1.1. Vulkan support to be tied with AMDGPU was known for 2 months already. And first Vulkan driver will be binary, sitting on the top of AMDGPU.

Quoting: leillo1975I ser that the Vulkan beta driver is 355.00. I have installed in my system 361.28. Are my driver Vulkan ready or only the driver 355 are capable?
You have to install Vulkan beta driver 355.00. It seems Vulkan API Is just added to older version of driver as it is for testing. When it will be OKed by QA, they will add it to latest driver release.
the thing is we have versions 355, 358 and 361 available in beta forms as well. so the questions still remains is it just the 355 or will the other newer versions receive the update? I'd assume yes... but I've learned to never assume anything because it's not always the case.
Well, they specifically pointed out 355.00 driver as being used for testing. As for how it will be added to other branches - that's question to Nvidia support I guess :)

AMD state they will support Vulkan on Linux in an upcoming amdgpu driver, not ready yet
16 Feb 2016 at 10:58 pm UTC

Quoting: lvlarkIt's a missed chance, for sure. But there isn't much use for a Vulkan-capable driver yet anyway. I'm not sure AMD will be on time here, though.
For me, personally, all that matters is if they'll be able to get it in in time for my next GPU. Which is autumn at the very soonest.
Isn't that important to get it right, you know? What's point of Vulkan driver which underperforms?

Quoting: neowiz73oh my :),this should help with Mir and Wayland when it comes to Nvidia support. it is a basic low level API. but can be expanded on. at least it's on github so more can contribute to it's code.
Wayland has their support already completed, it was pushed up in Wayland git master.

Quoting: subWell, AMDGPU will hit the kernel in a usable state in autumn, if things are going well.
Where did they give an ETA? Such a huge time until a usable Vulkan driver for AMD sounds pretty bad.
That's just realistic time frame. If everything works out, you will get AMD drivers with Vulkan support in autumn distro releases anyway.

Intel now shipping Vulkan enabled drivers
16 Feb 2016 at 10:25 pm UTC

Quoting: minjSo is Broadwell the limit for intel? It's been released in September, 2014. 18 months as a limit for a CPU, wtf?

I hope they will continue backporting it.
It is not about backporting, but does hardware have actual regs to manipulate card at level Vulkan requires, and can it be done in clear way which doesn't impact performance. Also support costs come into mind.

The Talos Principle getting a Linux build using Vulkan in a few days
16 Feb 2016 at 9:23 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: DamonLinuxPLFor now The Talos Principle on Vulkan is only wrapped... Nothing interested in performance state.
First, you get it working and fix all stability bugs. Then you start it tweaking and giving feedback to vendors about their drivers and performance.

Small steps.

That's actually nice, as majority of games are developed either in C++, or managed languages (which are yet to see Vulkan bindings, but I will guess that's not that important, as mostly engines, which are C or C++, will use them).

Their beta driver is based on a bit older driver, which might have issues with newest and coolest stuff. Clearly worth to report it though.

I really don't understand why people keep making big deal out of Nvidia/AMD situation. Yes, currently, AMD is lagging behind. But we know there's good reasons why AMD doesn't have Vulkan driver yet - as they are in the middle of big restructurisation. I will judge their drivers when there's bunch of good games with good vetted Vulkan supporting engines around and then compare numbers. Before that this is all moot and PR game - which I am surprised so many Linux gamers are very keen for.
