I have to say this is very exciting time to be Linux gamer. Will have to do some Nouveau tests with power settings and this patch.

The Witcher 3 didn't come to Linux likely as a result of the user-backlash from The Witcher 2

Quoting: STiATWell, they're right. But it was back the days, and I think we learned to be calmer by now. I remember that I was pretty disappointed that I couldn't play it on my rig (even meeting the specs), but kept my manners. It was one of the first AAA we got and everyone was looking forward to it. It was the first port we got really having huge issues. VP being new, not really native (I still say who cares as long as it works reasonably well), and the release was bad didn't help.

I think a lot of us learned in the past years. I was rather grateful that VP invested a lot of time and effort in fixing up TW2.

I hope VP has learned of their mistake pushing out the release with a performance like that isn't good. And I hope we've learned to work constructively with devs rather than being rude, bad attitude does not help, it gets us nowhere.
Amen here. Certainly VP didn't give up and their ports are now very serviceable - including TW2 current version.

I also believe we have learned a lot from that time.

Quoting: UrgickHere's no place for the drama like this, seriously guys. It's a business. Everyone should be prepared for the stuff like this. I've heard that someone thrown bad fries in the face to McDonald's employer, but that's doesn't mean that Mc will start blocking this person or employer will never serve fries for him again, they will start from the cause, will make fries better. It's really silly behaviour.
Ps: Duck the moralists.
PPs: I'm not one of them.
PPPs: I'm sorry for the bad eng.
Errr no, McDonald most likely will ban serving to that guy, at least locally. There are some red lines of decency you just don't cross, don't matter how disappointed you are as customer.

Anyway, I also believe we are more calmer and more approachable now. There have been some damage from this, obviously. But many loud Linux gamers have realized that giving feedback and just being decent will bring results faster than throwing tantrums. And that's hopefully achievement that sticks.

Quoting: AlveKattWow... Some of the commenters here actually say they deserved the backlash. Being a game dev must suck. Getting second thoughts about my dream to make my own game...
Don't let them define you. I personally think that while online communities have serious problems with such toxic people - and there's really not that ways to avoid them - it is always someone's choice to react to these nutcases.

Quoting: thelimeydragonCan't people put their anger into something more important:

Emacs vs Vi

(I hate both, I normally just use nano)
What about gedit or geany?

/me ducks :D

Also yeah, nano is handy as heck.

Quoting: HexDSLthe port was crappy when it was released. people complained because they couldnt play crappy port.. port fixed, people stop complaining...

The message that the porting team SHOULD have taken from this "dont ship broken game!"

The message they DID take from this was "screw them for calling us out on broken shit, lets not give them anything else"

Ill be honest, if THIS is their attitude, im not even sure i WANT their port any more.
No, message porters take was....if you try to do it, and if you fail to deliver, you get threats and hate mail.

It is huge difference from just being discontent with Witcher 2 release which WAS buggy and slow. One is personal attack, which is just low and huge no. Another is criticism about your professional work - which is all fine. We all have it at some point in our lives.

NONE of that was justified. Doesn't mean we should call out badly done ports or releases. We should. But learn some decency.

Quoting: sbolokanovAnd let the WAR begin!
I will pick no side but would like to warn both sides, not to drag in community as they do not speak for community…

Anyway, I personally don't care. I wouldn't buy anything but native anyway. So for me, it's no loss.

It will be ready to play via Wine soon (I have put my bet for september, but we will see if i'm right), so I will do that. That is if I still want to play the game to begin with.
Despite what you prefer, impression about community for Linux gamers is very important because it takes considerable good will to justify financial investment to develop/port games/engines for Linux. Because we're small, we can't afford to be arrogant.

So get off from your 'native versions or no go' high course, and get a slap of reality.

First I am really sad how loudest parts of Linux online community is not that different - and thus childish, petish, vile and toxic - from overall online geek community. Yeah, I know, this happens in almost all online communities. Still I hold open source communities at higher standard despite some of them failing regularly to achieve that.

Thus despite being complete opposite to crowd described here I am really sorry and while I don't feel responsible for their behaviour, I fully understand developer reaction.

I am still sticking with Linux and thanks to all devs and porters who have given me awesome entertainment on Linux platform for last two years.

As for toxicity being major factor of not porting W3 to Linux I doubt that - it seems there were major shifts within company itself due of multiple factors. However it still might have tipped a balance.

As for those justifying any hate speech towards developers or any other person really - grow up. Criticism, even loud one - sure. Hate speech, threats - this is where you lose every reason why. Because there are no any.

Space colony sim 'Maia' updated with lots of new goodies, screw the damn lava

It is actually fun to see lava to go trough everything like it would in real life. Afaik Simon even said he simulated lava flow pretty much close to real life :) I guess AI needs to be improved to behave better than humans would do :D
