After upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS to Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS, the game works fine with the hardware listed in my profile and 390.48 drivers..

I enjoyed Firewatch, but one has to wonder if Valve is going to buy/support someone like that, why not a hugely influential and community-driven developer like Feral?
How knows... Maybe Feral is already being helped financially by Valve.. That could explain the Steam exclusivity...
