Aspyr Media are getting a little help from Intel for the long-delayed Linux patch to Civilization VI

Quoting: GuestPerhaps support for amdgpu and radeonsi would be fine as well. IIRC CIV VI has no official support for those drivers at all and there are a lot of serious issues with the port when attempting to run them on Linux using MESA...

It doesn't help that the ports of Civ V and Beyond earth are BROKEN and crash constantly...

I am very dissappointed with Aspyr i don't remember a single port from them without serious issues. Especially when those games become older, they tend to break in many ways... I just hope Civ VII port goes to Feral...
I've played Civ6 intensively using amdgpu on arch. It worked perfectly fine. Sure loadings are slow but I didn't have any glitch.

The game crashed several times but it was not Civ fault actually. The amdgpu driver made X freeze. I have the same behavior with lots of GPU intensive games including the ones I play with Wine/DXVK so I doubt it's related directly to Civ but the driver.

I tried one kernel parameter that sees to fix the issue by disabling DMA for amdgpu. I don't know if I'm just lucky but there haven't been a freeze for days.

Paradox have launched Stellaris on GOG today, also a beta available for multiplayer across stores

Anyone knows if the GOG version give access to the Paradox Launcher? Of course I could buy it on Paradox store and on steam but the sales are on GOG right now.

But keeping games up to date on GOG is such a nightmare on Linux thanks to GOG neglecting so much (I lost hope on Galaxy for Linux). And Paradox launcher claims to be able to select the version of the games, which is very appealing.

The Linux Civilization VI patch with cross-platform multiplayer hit a bug, going back to approvals this week

Quoting: jensAnyway, bringing Civ6 to Linux (for what I'm very grateful) already needed a lot of cookies. I don't think a Civ7 will come to Linux by Aspire, if a Civ7 happens. Reading comments like yours I would totally understand this :(
Aspyr have a lot of experience porting Civ games and doing so brilliantly. What I hope is that Aspyr will be involved in the developpelemt of future Civ games much earlier.

We actually have seen many times with Kickstarter projects that starting working on the Linux port after the Windows release is a source of massive delay like Divinity Original Sin or cancellation. I guess it makes the port much more expensive, so you're less inclined to port future games to Linux.

I do hope there will be a Civ7. If Firaxis have cross platform compatibility in mind from the start, then it should be much simpler for Aspyr.

The delay is indeed long but they are right taking QA very seriously. It's much better waiting a bit longer for a patch than having a game crashing. How many game developpers do not even test their Linux build? I've seen quite a few and Unity did prove lacking QA on Linux.

It's highly probable that Firaxis did not have cross-platform compatibility in mind. I don't understand developpers choosing platform-specific technologies. Even if they plan to release only for Windows. If you want your game to still be playable in 10 years, be as standard as possible.

That's why I really like what valve is doing with Proton. They are pushing windows developpers to use cross-platform technologies such as Vulkan.

The Linux version of Civilization VI should get cross-platform online play in the next few weeks

Being a professional developer I understand how difficult it is to ensure the port behave the same way as the original. So I get why it's difficult for Aspyr. But what I don't get is why Feral did not have crossplatform issues in mind from the start. Civ5, Beyond Earth and Civ6 are on Linux so I hope they will look more closely at what could hurt porting when choosing middleware, networking protocol or everything else.

Thanks Aspyr for the continued effort in the port :)

I have a good old joke on Linux, it is "comming soon".

Liam, when you say the GOG version works perfectly, does it mean the game support multiplayer, cloud saves and overlay on Linux? I though such features relied on Galaxy. Could you clarify it please?

Wine Staging 2.16 is out with more D3D11, D3D8 & D3D9 work and fixes for games like The Witcher 3

Quoting: elmapulso, the D3D9/DirectX9 still dont run flawlessly ? dammit that is sad =\
Wine will likely never get finished. Windows is a moving target for them.

Even when an implementation might be classed as complete, there will likely still be work that can be done to improve it.
And even when D3D9 would be perfect, there are also some issues with Mesa. I have to run wine with a Mesa override to OpenGL3 to avoid textures being only red in some games.

By the way, does someone know if nine patches will be integrated into staging? It works incredibly well with Mesa/RadeonSI both performence and correctness wise.

There's a brand new Humble Bundle with almost all the games on Linux, oh my

Quoting: GuestWhat a huge pile of crap. A great example of why Steam is in badly need of better curation.
Don't confuse crap games with games that are not your taste. Crap games are those littered with bugs or just made of assets bought on a store, but considering the positive review on these titles, i doubt this is the case here. If you don't like it, just don't buy/play.
