The golden age of real-time strategy returns? Dying Breed releases October 7

Base building? Check! Resource gathering? Check! FMV cut-scenes? Heck yeah gimme that! Super weapons? Looks like it ticks that box and all.
Give me all of that (well maybe not the super weapons) but set in a fantasy world with modern graphics and storytelling and then I'll agree that the golden age of RTS has returned.

..so how long until the bully in chief will start saying things like "Gemini is saying unkind things about me, they're not allowed to do that"?
We're moving a bit too fast to the necessity of a Butlerian Jihad.

From the Command & Conquer Generals source code.

"Lets discuss how Windows is a flaming pile of poo"

Oh how that gave me a chuckle 😂

As someone working at a servicedesk, can confirm that Windows is still a flaming pile of poo.

Here's the most played Steam Deck games for November 2023

On the deck, I've been playing some Chained Echoes. I feel like the some is a bit of a problem, I'm not that far in and I'm not catching the story well enough. The vibrant environment and the JRPG nostalgia make up for it though!

November's Steam Survey shows another uptick for Linux thanks to Steam Deck

Quoting: CatKillerHopefully the growth of Linux will continue to outpace the shipments of the Deck as more and more people get the opportunity to say, "wow, I had no idea Linux was this good."
For that, Valve does need to work on the Desktop Mode interaction. The on-screen keyboard isn't great, and the interface is too desktop-oriented to work well with the touchscreen. Another option would be an accessory keyboard/stand. Preferably one made/sold/promoted by Valve so that a) it's well integrated/supported and b) it's much more in your face that the Deck is very much usable as a regular computer.

The best Linux distribution for gaming in 2023
3 Dec 2022 at 10:38 am UTC

Quoting: CyborgZetaI would recommend a flavor like Kubuntu over Ubuntu, especially for a new user. Plasma is going to look more "sane" than GNOME, which is something I can attest to from back when I first tried Linux.
I wholeheartedly agree. I denied the Plasma bandwagon for a bit (the first time I tried KDE desktop, several years ago, I didn't like it too much), but switched a few months ago on my desktop. On my laptop, I use Fedora with Cinnamon desktop. I like them both so much better than the stock Ubuntu desktop. Nowadays, everytime I use that on my gf's laptop, I'm appalled. I might like it less than the Windows DE.

GNOME does appear to have improved a lot, but Plasma and Cinnamon are going to be much more recognizable coming from Windows.

Steam Deck top 20 for November, plus a new stable Steam Deck Client update
3 Dec 2022 at 10:28 am UTC

None of these are games I play but definitely a few of these are games I'm interested in.
However it's going to have to wait. I decided that, with the money I spent on the Deck, I'm going to use it to play through my backlog a bit...
But if I ever catch Elden Ring on sale, I don't think I'll be able to resist.

Valve upgrade Steam Deck when docked in new OS Beta, plus big Steam Deck Client update
24 Sep 2022 at 7:24 am UTC

Quoting: Purple Library Guy
Quoting: FisterfrankAny word on the dedicated supported “dual boot” that’s suppose to be included in steam OS 3 update?
Gotta say if there was, I really wouldn't care.
Me neither, I finally have a device that has Linux installed out of the box, with all the proper support that entails. Why would I want to do anything about that? OTOH, what if I wanted to dual boot it with Fedora or Debian?

But back to what was actually updated: The on-screen keyboard improvements do help a lot. Although I still find navigating in Desktop mode finicky. Anyone know of any package that allows for better desktop controls? Like, idk, using right track-pad for controlling the cursor and the left one for scrolling? Or right for cursor, left for fine-grained cursor, and a joystick for scrolling?

Looks like Valve are adding a feedback system for Steam Deck Verified (update: it's live)

Updated text on Download page to clarify when player is downloading a patch vs an initial download
Seems like a small thing, but I'm happy to read this. It's more about the mentality this signifies: Tell your user what's happening. Since October, I have to use Windows for work again, and keep bumping into utterly useless messages, like 'Not implemented' (yes that's the full extent of the error message).

The Steam Deck has released, here's my initial review

As for the whole "How will Windows fare on it" question:
I don't think that should be an important point on this website. But I am quite curious about it. Since forever, (the majority of) Linux users have been using hardware that's been tested and optimised for Windows. And yet, for some tasks, Linux has performed better. Now, for the first time (at least on this scale and scope - down to the APU), hardware and software have been designed to have a great performance with a Linux-based operating system. I'm curious to the process of replacing SteamOS with Windows, and curious how the performance will be. Will any performance differences be in the same range as they are on systems that come with Windows pre-installed?

As a sidenote: I find it funny how big of a deal a well-functioning sleep mode is. Both GN and LTT were taken aback by how well this works. I've not experienced issues with suspend on my Linux machines, so wasn't aware that this was an issue. (granted my laptop needed a BIOS update for the CPU to work well with Linux at all, but it's been a breeze since).
