Opinion: Why We Want Native Ports Only

Quoting: neffo
Quoting: liamdawePersonally I don't see it as an attack, and it frustrates me when people see criticism as an attack.
I agree, but Linux users are pretty hyper-sensitive to criticism of the platform too.
I am a Linux user and I have a laundry list of things I could say about the platform coming in a from a relatively new-ish user's perspective and no, I don't want to get into this :)

In all seriousness, though, not all Linux users are hyper-sensitive, I think it's just a small outlier that are such :)

New games = native ports, please, unless there is some major technical hurdle that prevents this from happening.
Older games (talking 90s to early 2000s) = whatever works best on Linux.

You'll have to ask Redfern about that :P Not a fan of editing people's GOG mixes for them unless they specifically request it :)

Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri, Another Classic Released On GOG For Linux

Quoting: ElectricPrismThis reminds me of G-NOME by 7th Level. I sure do miss the gritt and badassness of those older games. A Golden Age of Indie Game Development was the 90s.

As someone who was already gaming in the 90s, I have mixed feelings about this "Golden Age" line of thinking.

Mixed feelings because back then developers were constantly re-inventing the wheel what with there being different engines for every single damn game and not all of them ran well. Weird development decisions such as the infamous Voodoo Memory manager used in Ultima VII and VIII which was hell on Earth when you had to configure expanded and extended memory. Let's not forget all of the IRQ conflicts, boy, those were ALWAYS fun.

Later on you had specific editions of games made to run on very specific hardware like the different editions of a couple of MechWarrior games that were made for some very specific video cards at the time.

I think the only thing that makes the 90s a golden age would be the quality of the games themselves in terms of complexity, mechanics, and actual gameplay :)

Quoting: GuestI’m afraid there won’t be a lot of Trine sales on GOG since it’s been on sale DRM-free on the humble store and in bundles for so long. Well, maybe I’m wrong. In any case it’s nice to see not so old Linux games on GOG.
You're probably right but at least the Linux version is on GOG and that's what's important in the end, imho :)

@Liamdawe,

Sorry I didn't inform you of this myself, didn't think it would be a big deal since Trine Enchanted Edition has already been available everywhere else for Linux :)

Pretty good deal and a great game (Linux port works perfectly).
Glad to hear the port works well for you :) I already beat the game when I was on Windows and it was a pretty decent game for me there so I am glad to hear that the Linux port was also treated with care :)
