XCOM 2 released for SteamOS & Linux, port report included

Quoting: melkemindAh I see. I just read some of the Windows reviews and how bad the performance is on it too. I think that still raises some questions about the engine though. It's a "last gen" engine that developers are trying to mix with "next gen" graphical features. It seems to repeatedly end badly (like the Arkham Knight fiasco). They should have aimed for Unreal Engine 4, even if it delayed the release date a little.
From an article explaining why the game had to be PC exlusive:
XCOM 2 runs on a heavily modified version of Unreal Engine 3.5 (Firaxis’ customizations are too extensive to easily move to Unreal 4), which in some ways has been rewritten to the point of being “unrecognizable,” and it’s much simpler to make that work on one platform than three or more at once.
So their engine is not the same engine that Arkham Knight, etc. are using.

(Arkham Knight was a really bad port, and if the engine was the problem, then they probably used a modified one)
They use the same base engine, but no developer uses a game engine "as is".

I have perfectly smooth performance in XCOM, and while I realize it's an older game, I'm not seeing anything in XCOM 2 to lead me to believe that the graphics have been substantially updated, and it's running on the same engine as the previous game, so the poor performance is puzzling.

I'm also seeing complaints on the official forums about mission turn-limits which force you to rush through certain levels, and some bugs with the Vipers where they can grab soldiers through walls.

It sounds like XCOM's wonky camera problems made their way into the sequel. That's a shame.

Also, reading the official Steam forums, seems that even Windows users are complaining about poor performance and bugs, so it's not just Linux.

Quoting: BeamboomWow - I totally expected to have to wait a while for the Linux version. This is remarkably cool.
It was announced as a day 1 Linux release from the beginning.

Batman: Arkham Knight for Linux & SteamOS cancelled

Quoting: FeistI really feel the need for some spectacular news and I need it fast: "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided", "Fallout 4", "Dishonored II", "Mafia 3", "Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen", "GTA V", "Doom"....basically some title that counts as a "huge, action-packed AAA top-of-the-charts extravaganza", to balance this loss.
Mad Max?

Mad Max looks like it really is coming to SteamOS & Linux after all, another massive game for us

Yes, but the surprise is that Arkham Knight for Linux has been cancelled.

Batman: Arkham Knight for Linux & SteamOS cancelled

Well, this is too bad. I wonder why it was cancelled? Was it because WB was concerned it wouldn't sell enough to be worth the trouble, or did Feral encounter insurmountable technical hurdles?

However, this news is mitigated by the Mad Max news, so WB apparently still has faith in the Linux/SteamOS platform.

Quoting: subAs AMD user I'll most likely have to play it under Windows.
You'll can buy it on the Feral store, then play it under windows :p
Why buy it on Feral store, to reward their bad decisions? They should feel the sting of their incompetence.
Or maybe you should buy an Nvidia card to punish AMD? Feral doesn't write AMD's drivers, so there's no point punishing Feral for something that is out of their control.

Quoting: kshadeDid they fix Steam Controller support under Linux?
I was wondering about that myself. They're aware of the problem in Eurotruck Simulator 2 and have said they're working on it, but no fix yet.
There seems to be a general controller issue on Linux. I got opentrack head tracking working via my Android phone, which sets up a virtual controller at /dev/input/js2 but ETS2 does not see it at all.
Here's the email I received from them regarding ETS2:

Hello,

We are aware of the fact there is an issue with controler detection - our developers are currently working on a fix that will resolve this issue.

Best regards,
SCS Software Tech Support
That was about a month ago, so they're definitely aware of the problem. I'm just not sure why it's taking them so long to fix it.
