Vulkan Looks Impressive Against OpenGL In A New Intel Demo

Quoting: Avehicle7887Looks yummy, personally I see no reason why companies would choose DX12 over this. A powerful cross platform API such as this would nullify the "Our engine was written for DirectX" excuse and in turn games can start coming to Mac and Linux the same way they do on Windows and Consoles without too many additional costs.

I'm probably going too fast here I know, but it's time for developers and publishers to start accepting the fact that Linux on the desktop is something real and it's not just "An OS for geeks", some already do, while the big ones still have to budge.
Developers use DirectX not because it's the best but because Microsoft has invested tremendous resources in promotion and training, so as a result, many developers are familiar and comfortable with it.

Vulkan might be superior to DirectX, but so is OpenGL which hasn't translated into a lot of developers embracing it, so if Valve/AMD/Intel/whoever wants developers to start using Vulkan, they're going to have to invest a lot of money in promotion, training seminars, and technical support.

Still, I'm looking forward to the day when crossplatform support is just a given, and when a developer says that a game will be available for PC, they really do mean PC.

GTX 760 Vs R7 370 4G In Company Of Heroes 2

Performance with the 760 looks pretty darn good to me. It's not the fastest card on the market, but I've found it a very capable performer. I don't see myself needing to upgrade for at least another year.

Quoting: datuxSo I gave it a shot with my AMD GPU and the newest catalyst drivers. As expected and announced by Feral it's not working at all (crash after the first game logo screen). I'm a bit disappointed in the ports if their they are only usable for Nvidia users.
Really no point in owning an AMD GPU in Linux until AMD gets their drivers sorted out. It's an unfortunate situation and kind of gives Nvidia a monopoly on Linux, but that's how it is at the moment. Hopefully AMD steps up their game soon.

Quoting: BillNyeTheBlackGuyI tried to get into this game a few days ago, but its using the same old boring Batman Arkham battle system that other AAA games use. I'm honestly sick of the same boring button mashing until counter type system.
Well, I guess if you think the Arkham games are boring then you're really not going to like this game since it's basically Arkham Middle Earth. I, on the other hand, love the Arkham games and have had a blast with Shadow of Mordor.

Quoting: BeamboomI got one - ONE - complaint about SoM, and that's about the game and not Ferals porting. It's in regards to the skins. In every cut-scene or even some special effects ingame the default skin is used.

This looks particularly idiotic when you use the female skin. She fades over to being a male now and then, and gawd how that spoils the immersion.
But even while using the male protagonist it is quite annoying to not have the outfit consistent throughout the experience.
This is probably because some of the cutscenes are in-engine and others are prerendered.

Quoting: edqeIt is great to have this game on Linux although personally I don't like the game at all. The game is way too simplistic, repetitive and easy (at least with m+kb) for my taste. Nemesis-system is fine but Crusader Kings has it already but in much more deep and versatile form.
I have no idea how you thought to compare this game to Crusader Kings 2.

Quoting: Mountain ManBlame AMD for their crap drivers.
115 games in my Linux/SteamOS library, 112 out of 115 just working fine, 3 not even start, or constantly crashing after the main menu. This three are Pixel Piracy, Dying Light, and SoM, convince me about crappy drivers.
The fact that 100% of your games don't work without issue can be blamed on AMD's poor driver support. And based on what I've seen in various Steam forums, I think you're lucky that only 3 games out of 115 are giving you issues.

Quoting: melkemindAsk and ye shall receive. Valve's Linux port of Left 4 Dead 2 significantly outperformed the Windows version. The key here, of course, is that it was not a third-party port. Companies like Feral aren't working with their own code. So, I don't know if it's an inherent problem with OpenGL or the drivers considering games that are day-one releases on Linux (like Victor Vran) seem to perform flawlessly. Perhaps it's more the inherent nature of porting.
To be fair, that Left 4 Dead 2 test is three-years old now and not really relevant any more since both OpenGL and DirectX have improved since then.

But good call on Victor Vran. It shows that games on Linux don't have to lag behind their Windows counterparts. X-Plane 10 is another case study which proves that OpenGL is no slouch on cross platform games. Of course then we have Day 1 Linux releases like Cities Skylines which lag significantly behind Windows for some inexplicable reason.

So who knows.
