Valve has boosted their Linux ranks by hiring another developer to work on open source graphics

Also if you're using 3d render engines like Redshift or Octane you're stuck with Nvidia as they require CUDA.
So yeah, I'd love to see Nvidia suck less when it comes to the way they handle their driver development and their general attitude (yup, I'm taking a long look at the Wayland case now), but that doesn't change that I have little choice...

Quoting: ShmerlSolution is quite easy and likely will be a common choice for many Linux gamers going forward. Ditch Nvidia and use AMD. It's a shame of course that Nvidia are being jerks when it comes to proper Linux support, but it's not our problem anymore. Not so easy if you're doing stuff outside gaming. AMD open source drivers sucked when it comes to OpenCL and Vulkan support last time I've checked. And those may be a must depending on what you do.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III releasing for Linux on June 8th

Just to make sure - do you mean disabling audio options in the DoW2 settings panel? Or something on a system level?

Quoting: GuestThe only thing I could try in a similar circumstance was disable bits & pieces of audio (for me it was speech). Same symptom: just after the first mission loads, it crashes. I didn't think it'd be a problem for a supported distro, but it's worth a try.Interesting you mention audio. I fondly remember that during the benchmark, after the progress bar loaded up I've heard some orc/gretchin mumbling and then the game would hang up (as mentioned not crash, but freeze).

But to give them a bit of credit I humbly admit my workstation is a bit less common setup - dual Xeon workstation I use for rendering and my 3d modelling.
I'd still love to play DoW2, but at this time I don't have my hopes up.

Quoting: liamdaweInteresting, did you email Feral support? DOW2 is one Linux title I've never had an issue with loading.yeah, and it seems they gave up after a while. Initially they suggested trying a supported distro (I think Ubuntu 16.04), but that didn't help at all. The game launches, but just after the mission loads it hangs up (no crash, thus no crash report).

great and bad news at the same time. Awesome as I really want to try this game. Bad as no multi-system multiplayer kills a lot of charm (would be willing to get it only with a massive discount with -nix only multiplayer). Otherwise I'd be willing to try risk getting it , even though DoW2 port didn't work on my workstation (no matter supported or unsupported distro has been installed).
Wine Staging 2.8 released with more functional 32-bit fake DLLs and Starcraft I should now work properly

did anyone tried starcraft2 (or any battle.net game) with it? A while back I've tried to launch it, but it seems Blizzard did something which prevent me from even getting into launcher.
Dawn of War III looks like it might come to Linux

would totally love to play it on Linux . If it is going to happen I have my fingers crossed it works on my PC this time - I hadn't much luck with DoW2 (and it is not that my hardware specs are too low - but it seems I have quite spotty luck when it comes to my dual xeon workstation and Feral ports, they either work beautifully or not at all - DoW2 gets stuck upon mission start, without any error messages).
NVIDIA 378.09 beta driver released, adds OpenGL threaded optimizations by default and more

installed and seems to be working ok on my end (gtx 980).
Sadly it does not seem we're any closer to Wayland support as (unless I overlooked something) Nvidia still pushes for egl streams, not gbm , which is not according to the spec and would mean the compositor would have to be written specifically for the Nvidia driver (which would be insanity).
Nvidia why you fail us in this matter...
After working on machine with Wayland I'd literally love to have it on my workstation.

Some thoughts on switching from Ubuntu to Antergos for Linux gaming

I can feel your pains with Ubuntu. The issues I've been having with it have kept me on a Windows side for quite long before I tried other distro (sadly I believed that other ones are difficult - which turned out so untrue, quite the contrary). I can appreciate the work Canonical initially did , showing others that if you want to make mainstream distro you need to make it more user friendly. Sadly from there I think it was downward slope, with unfinished pieces and unfulfilled promises.
Currently I'm on Fedora and I'm super happy with it. Zero problems with the system - the only ones I had were not with the system itself, but with proprietary apps I use for work (which is kinda ironic considering one of the reasons I chose RPM based distro was that most of commercial apps for 3D are tested against those).
Also kudos for the Fedora team efforts on pushing the most promising tech into mainstream as soon as (sanely) possible. One of computers in my office runs Wayland session and I can clearly see why it is a big thing. If Nvidia had finally did the right thing and made the driver for it according to specs I'm pretty sure I'd made the switch with all the pcs in the workshop.
I'm also quite tempted to try one of Arch derivatives or Solus on my test laptop - but it will have to wait till I have a bit of extra time for such experiments :) .

for me it's pretty fantastic I can launch it on my workstation. Yeah, I'd prefer a native version , but still I'm quite surprised how well it performs under wine. Also it's the second game (after DeusEx: Mankind Divided) where I've noticed good multithreading.
The game itself is gorgous and testament how beneficial cross platform APIs can be.

What game are you truly thankful to have on Linux & SteamOS?

Xcom2 hands down. Haven't been so hooked while playing a game in a long time. Also along DeusEx a title that brought my faith in Feral back (as my previous 2 purchases, DoW and Tomb rRider namely, didn't work on my hardware setup - which I can understand to some degree as it is not everyday Joe's machine, rather a dual processor machine I use for 3d work and rendering).
