Intel begins talking up their open source efforts for their upcoming dedicated GPU

I've always had AMD graphics cards...and CPUs for that matter. I'm not sure I'd even consider an Intel GPU unless the performance blew the socks off whatever AMD was offering.

What have you been playing recently and what do you think of it?

Quoting: vgnmnkyI've been playing Skyrim SE in Proton for a few weeks now. No special config, it just worked, other than needing an audio fix. Runs very nicely (occasional freezes, loss of some audio), better than the none-SE version ever did with WINE, and that's with an Intel GPU (NUC). Using Manjaro, for info.

Quoting: Scoopta...I'm still waiting for Skyrim special edition to be playable in proton because once that happens it'll be freaking amazing on this setup.

Probably should have clarified. I'm running RADV with LLVM 7.0.1. The DXVK wiki mentions some games have a tendency to hang with LLVM 7.0.1 and unfortunately it appears Skyrim SE is one of them. I keep hoping that a newer RADV with LLVM 8 will end up in the Debian experimental repos(I run Sid) but not as of yet. I guess I could try my hand at compiling RADV myself but that sounds painful.

I recently picked up Cities Skylines again and am finding that quite fun. There was a period for a while where I wasn't gaming much but I recently bought a 3rd monitor so I can play at a massive resolution of 5760x1080 and I have to say it's amazingly immersive. I would have done it sooner if it weren't for the fact that eyefinity doesn't exist on Linux. The only reason I did now is because sway recently got support for global fullscreen and I've found that it works great as an eyefinity alternative. I'm still waiting for Skyrim special edition to be playable in proton because once that happens it'll be freaking amazing on this setup.

Darwin Project no longer works in Steam Play, due to Easy Anti-Cheat

Quoting: Code Artisani am surprised that easyanticheat does support Linux since it needs to operate at the kernel level.
Just because the windows version runs in kernel space means nothing for the Linux version.
By enforcing open-source through GPLv2, Linux makes anti-cheats impossible to be effective. You will never see something like ESEA on linux.
I really don't think license matters here. Anybody can write kernel space code for windows. The fact that with Linux you can modify the kernel itself does very little for you when you're already in ring 0.

The free and open source game engine 'Godot Engine' is closing in on the big 3.1 release

Godot looks like a really cool engine. My only complaint is they recently added C# support through mono and I wish they had put that effort into either a different language or something else entirely. I know it might be helpful for people coming from Unity but I don't like how the game industry is starting to revolve around C#. It's nice that it's at least optional.

Erik Wolpaw, one of the writers of Portal and Half-Life: 2 episodes seems to have returned to Valve

Something I'm curious about is if In the Valley of Gods will be ok Source 2 or Unity seeing as Unity was used for Firewatch.

Hey Liam. Just a little bug report for you. This page doesn't render the current status of the new Proton question. Not sure if you're already aware of that or not.

The Atari VCS team put out a post to talk about the Linux OS along with an open source project teaser

Quoting: slaapliedjeWell, there was talk in the thread on here about the Steam Link that was saying that they didn't work as well on AMD cards due to lack of nvenc on them. That is where I got the information. I haven't bought a Radeon card since my 9250 I bought for my Amiga...
AMD has its own technology called VCE. Whether valve uses it or not is another question entirely but usually VCE and NVENC are used for encoding video anyway not decoding it which is what the VCS would be doing. After all the steam link itself doesn't have an Nvidia or AMD GPU and therefore can't use either yet performance is fine.
