Dreamfall Chapters review
8 Dec 2015 at 1:55 am UTC Likes: 2

Thanks for your honest and detailed review. This is definitely something on my list.

The following sentence seemed a bit strange:

Gameplay in Dreamfall Chapters is not good or extensive, and that's what I like about it.
I am assuming that you mean something like "the gameplay mechanics are not deep or complex." Calling it "not good" puts me off a bit.

New Linux Gaming Survey For November

Quoting: StianTheDarkI kindly ask you to stop using Google Forms for this, I block Google because of privacy reasons. Google Forms have trackers too you see.
While I sympathize with your point of view, it is very easy to open the survey in a private window (Firefox) where any attempt to track you is useless. Close the window when you are done and everything that google may have recorded about you is discarded.

Puzzle Platformer 'Adventures of Shuggy' Released For Linux On Steam

Thanks for pointing this out! I just picked it up. Gotta love bats...

Some pretty decent platforming. I have only finished the dungeon levels, but the controls don't seem too bad using the x360 controller (d-pad for movement). I guess we will see when the game gets harder, but I enjoy it so far.

Gunmetal Arcadia Will Get An Action Platformer Prequel Early Next Year

This is really interesting news. I really liked his other games.

I was excited to hear about the decision to make a classic action platformer in the same universe as I always preferred those over roguelikes.
Yes, me too. I have tried to enjoy a number of roguelikes but they just don't seem to hold much interest for me. Obviously there is a huge fan-base for them, but I guess I am not really in there...

I would have normally waited for a sale, but this seems to be a worthy cause! Thanks for the recommendation, flesk. I find I can always trust your good taste in games.

I hope the increased publicity brings the devs more success.

An Interview With Corpses 'N Souls Developer Side Scroll Studios

Thank-you to Flesk for the excellent interview and to valcan_s for the very detailed and thoughtful answers. I love metroidvania games so I am excited to see what you have created when it is ready to play.

Quoting: MGOidmy advice to you is: make the controls right.
I really agree with this. I think of games like Guacamelee, Outland, Teslagrad, Dust and "You have to Win the Game." Each has a slightly different style of control, but they are all quite carefully balanced. Finding that balance and making it work with game controllers is so important. Having tight controls means I don't mind higher difficulty because I know that failure is my fault and not the game being clumsy.

Good luck on getting your game out there!

Ubuntu Developers Looking To Simplify Getting Latest Nvidia Graphics Drivers

Interesting.

Reading more of the mailing list thread, I see that they are wanting something less "bleeding edge" than the xorg-edgers PPA. I have been using edgers for a while quite successfully but I think it includes more experimental packages, beyond just the nvidia drivers.

A "semi-official" driver PPA sounds like a great start!

Aquaria Now Available DRM Free On GOG For Linux

Quoting: JudasIscariotOur Linux version is at 1.1.3 and runs just fine on 64-bit Linux systems, no assembly required :)
I can confirm that. I just bought it from GOG and am running Kubuntu 14.04 64bit. I haven't run it for long, but it seems smooth and it detects my (knockoff) wireless 360 controller without problem.

Thanks GOG for continuing to support Linux! I can't wait until Galaxy will handle my Linux game updates...

Exploration Platformer 'Super Win The Game' Gets New Content And A New Low Price

You make a good point:

minor challenges won't keep tripping you up with random bullcrap
This is something that must be hard to balance as a game dev. I understand that randomness is a staple of some games, such as roguelikes, but I appreciate knowing that my skill is rewarded once I gain it. No need to give me experience points if my real-life abilities improve with the game.

BTW, total respect if you managed to get the YOLO achievement in the first game. I wasn't that dedicated!

I thought I would post again in this thread. I just finished the game as well. I took my time and completed all the achievements, some of which were very challenging (I did look up a few).

I really enjoyed it! It is a bit hard to pinpoint what makes this such a good game. The visuals are fun when you use the CRT effect, but I skipped over the generation of games that it is a homage to. I turned off the CRT fairly quickly. After that, the graphics are very very simple. However, the gameplay is so incredibly tight that I enjoyed every level and dying over and over on the hard parts was completely fair. The respawn is very quick and allows repeated attempts on the more difficult sections.

If you have any interest in retro-platformers, this is a superb game. I really wish it had as much recognition as his free one, since I want to see what he does next...
