Valve looking to contract experienced Mesa developers to work on the open source AMD driver for OpenVR

Finally! I always wondered if Valve will take steps to either directly supporting studios to port games or support the development. Now they do! I guess to have a fully working steam machine they'd need to promote VR as well. (:

Dear Ehvis,

I did read that in advance. As well as I did for COH2. I did own the game already so I didn't bought it. I might have bought some copies to gift them to my friends if only they could play together with me.

I do know there might be obstacles, thank you for letting me know again. I'd also like to mention that I'm a dev myself so I got an idea of what they're facing (even though they do not spoiler the languages and implementations in use). What I want to say is either...

A. Fix the linux/mac code accordingly. I guess there has to be a way to deal with the syncing.
B. Patch the Windows version. What's the deal with that? I don't think the whole game needs a rewrite for this.

So what's the point of porting a dead multiplayer game with no one playing it?

Grrrrr what kind of a useless port! I was so happy when I saw them porting one of the games I loved to play! Still, there're now 400 people online but NO Linux/Mac Gamer. Why would you split the community like that? I really don't get why it isn't part of the contract of porting to have a working cross-platform-game.

So, finally: NO MORE MONEY for NON-cross-platform games from my side. >.<

Btw, do you know who hired Feral for the port? I feel like reporting back to them to make Feral port the game. I'm really upset like that. It feels still like being 2nd class gamer, if the guys treat you like that. I know, there're syncing obstacles but come on: It's a devs job to get around them!

You have no excuse not to own Company of Heroes 2 now, Humble Bundle Company of Heroes bundle is live

Even I love RTS i don't like the setting. I do already own the game. Anyway, I would play Warhammer now if there only would be people playing it. Feral? Cross-Platform?!

Quoting: edddeduckferalCross platform multiplayer is unlikely to happen due to the age of the game and the complexity of the problem. Here is an explanation of the problem (it's the same as we encountered with Company OF Heroes 2 & the Total War games)

Hey edddeduck,

actually I know about these problems from the post you just linked. To be honest (I'm a dev myself) the information presented over there is not quite precise. Since I don't know any backgrounds about the involved technologies it's hart for me to give any solution to the problem given.

Still I think to have multiplayer games that do split the already small community into windows vs mac/linux is a desater! I want to play with my friends! I'd also be willing to buy and donate the game to them. But what's the reason if I then still can't play with them?

I'd be happy if feral might still look into the issue. Maybe a rewrite of the whole multiplayer for the windows cliens as well might solve the problem. Also an emulated solution/middleware to synchronize the clients might be an idea.

Thank you for your hard work anyway!!!

If you like to follow several streams on a regular base, it might be a good idea to go for Livestreamer Twitch GUI [External Link]. The program helps you to configure your custom player as well as notifies you of streams going live. It has the option tu use a nice, dark ui and Login to your Twitch Account to chat as well.

There should also be packages provided for your favorite distro as well as Windows.

Quoting: burnallThis will be the closest thing to Starcraft on Linux then, I guess.
It's not like Starcraft in any kind of way. Except it's an RTS.

Oh yes I do love these games! Thank you so much for porting it @FERAL! :)

@edddeduck_feral: But could you please explain me why you guys once more do a dead multiplayer port? We NEED cross-platform-support! Even the windows-version is not that much frequented nowadays. I know it's difficult to get the whole thing synchronised (I'm a dev myself!) but like this it's not even worth to port the Multiplayer part at all. :(

I don't feel like playing the game after it has been released. Was totally looking forward to it, but now the attraction is gone. Things may take a while but I feel like he's a bit too busy with the whole thing on his own...
