I use a 1920x1080 res and the view distance set to minimum.
Changing the rest of the settings (shadows/foliage/grain/etc) makes no difference whatsoever.

I'm inclined to believe that the performance improvement that we see is caused mainly by the SSAO removal, which is not something that I would call an improvement.

Also some of the zombies (still) have missing heads.
I know they are zombies, but come on...

Well, I'm thinking that you have a better chance to get the survey when you install Steam. So for those with older and stable installations the chances to get it are very slim.
Maybe Windows users are reinstalling the OS more frequently?
I know that at least among my friends/relatives/coworkers the method of reinstall Windows is the solution of choice when something is going wrong/sluggish etc.

Just a thought.
