Zotac Announces A Proper Steam Machine With SteamOS (Updated)
4 Mar 2015 at 3:35 pm UTC

Quoting: vulture...if you want desktop you DON'T want SteamOS. SteamOS is aimed at console couch potatos who need looooots of gaming, little or nothing of desktop. also, desktop will never feel as good as on any distro due to many reasons. mainly realtime kernel which makes otherwise smooth operations look choppy...
Agreed with the first part, but really there is nothing choppy in its usage. It feels like any other desktop.

New Linux Gaming Survey For March

Hm, don't know what to say about buying a Steam Machine....depends on who is manufacturing it.
I mean, if some whatever company decides to simply slap together some off the shelf hardware parts and calling it a Steam Machine, then I'm not interested, I already did that. (not that is something wrong with a product like that)

I would be more likely to buy something custom made like the Alienware machine, but something more powerful (the Alienware is too weak for my taste).

But the best scenario for me it would be to buy one made by Valve.
I know, they don't intend to do that for the moment...but you never know.
Even better, I would love to get my hands on one of those original 300 beta Steam Machines.
Is not about their value in money, but rather because I consider them (in a sense) a piece of history.
Also, it pains me to know that some of their owners erased SteamOS and oh, the insult, installed Windows on them.

Well, I wish there were more games like Spate. Is definitely not a usual one, but it was a great experience for me. It's world's emptiness was exactly what I liked about it.

Voted for it few days ago.
It is interesting to see how similar (visually speaking) it is with other two horror (Unity) games on Steam:

Dying Light Patch Released, Look Ma No Blur

Quoting: scaine
Quoting: dubigrasuEdit /usr/bin/steamos-session (the steamcompmgr line) to look like this:
steamcompmgr -v &
and you'll get a FPS counter like this one
That's great - the option to see FPS only exists in the standard client, so I haven't been able to test framerate difference until now. I'll hopefully get a chance to do this tonight.
I have already some benchmarks showing the FPS difference:

Like I said, SteamOS is somewhat lower on pure FPS.

Quoting: liamdaweEdit > I managed to install the SteamOS session, but without an FPS counter it's not really possible to check rates.
Edit /usr/bin/steamos-session (the steamcompmgr line) to look like this:
steamcompmgr -v &

and you'll get a FPS counter like this one:

Expecting miracles for playing games in SteamOS session will most likely leave you severely disappointed.
That being said, (although FPS is generally lower in SteamOS session) it does fell somewhat smoother for many games, especially Unity ones.

SteamOS does use Gnome 3 as DE for its desktop session, but for gaming (in its default SteamOS BPM session) is using steamcompgr.

At times in some busy areas it briefly drops to around 50 FPS, but most of the time goes around 100 FPS.
