wait, what?
did mac even had support?
Some elements for it yes: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/commit/a84120449d8177fa40f3de729e55d238d3c24877

Part of a larger series of changes that will be making it in to Proton at some point. The commit that states removal of macOS is from that PR I think.

Quite likely to be temporary. There is a Codeweavers employee looking at making macOS wine64 builds run 32 bit apps I think (which would probably make it in to Linux builds too), which is going to be a critical thing for them to be able to continue offering their product on future macOS versions that remove 32bit support completely. Embrace, extend, and protect? Microsoft joins the Open Invention Network to 'protect Linux and open source'

Quoting: GuestLinux is going to conquer the whole world. It is a matter of when, not if. So Microsoft is making the right moves... I expect them to turn Windows into a Linux distro + proprietary libraries/API/DE at some point. It will be cheaper for them to maintain, will be able to enter most markets Windows can't enter/dominate now, like mobiles/servers, and will still allow them to be top dog, assuming they create a good and polished Linux based desktop OS and make linux-compatible versions of their stuff like Office...

People may laugh at this idea now, but it is an inevitability. Trust me. It may not happen in 5 or even 10 years, but it will eventually... The traditional "pay for a Windows licence" model is dead.

It's certainly crazy but it is an idea I've been wondering about for a while now. Turn Windows in to a Linux distro that doesn't run Linux...

GNU/Windows!!!

It's just so... wrong. PC describes the hardware, not the software.

EXACTLY. PC means Personal Computer, not WINDOWS computer. The term applies to any general computing device regardless of OS. Linux, Apple, Windows, etc all fall under the umbrella term PC.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world that PC was a synonym for Windows.
Even Apple promoted the term "PC" to mean "Windows computer" in old advertising.

I fail to see what your point here is.

They're not, and it's not required for their games at all - it also functions as a handy download manager for your DRM free library.

Valve officially confirm a new version of 'Steam Play' which includes a modified version of Wine

This is why Proton is so important..

QuoteHonestly, this sounds like great news to me. I would have switched to Linux years ago if game support was more robust. If Valve can finally make that happen, I'll say goodbye to Windows without a second thought.

Quoting: ben914I see a lot of people worrying that this could hurt native ports, which I don't want to dismiss the possibility, but I can also see how this could potentially be a really good thing. With Valve helping Wine/DXVK/VKD3D/etc. efforts to improve these tools to run Windows games on Linux it could bring more people to the Linux platform, and if enough people switch to Linux it could be a good intensive to get developers to optimise their games to run better on Linux through native ports and/or switching to Vulkan/OpenGL API's. Only time will tell, but the optimistic side of me hopes this is the case. :)

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and say the use of DX9-12 to Vulkan might actually encourage switching to Vulkan completely for further better compatibility and speed. And hopefully then lead to more devs saying "Bugger it, just do a native port".

Speaking of Wine on MacOS. Do you know why WineHQ builds have not enabled Vulkan in the official packages? Some users on inXile forum needed help with that for The Bard's Tale I remaster. Since I'm not using MacOS, I was able to give only general guidelines on Wine usage.

No idea re: wineHQ builds - official macOS builds seem to be absolute basics. I think Homebrew and macports builds enable it all? Even PlayOnMac has only basic wine builds for macOS. Rather hoping Proton will turn the macOS wine situation on its head - full support for macOS + Linux can only improve things for each vice/versa.

Quoting: ElectricPrismI wonder if this will be on Mac too via MoltenVK, if so IIRC that's like 7% of Steam may have access to new games never before available -- that could make a lot of money for publishers and money for valve.

Edit: Again in other words I wanted to reiterate that just because a game runs on Linux doesn't mean it has my or everyone's favor. I will compromise some (suchas buying the whole Final Fantasy series), but there are still many situations I am unwilling to run into bugs, so I will put my dollars to Linux FIRST publishers and content first.) I am certain I am not the only one who matches my alignment.

However for noobs, converts, and everyone else, it's a dream come true.
