Popular multiplayer code editor Zed gets a Linux release

Quoting: tmtvlI probably should try it some time to see if there are any features in it I would like to port to Emacs.
The various emacs packages for git forge integration & llm integration seem to cover a lot of zed's features, though (not sure if this is at all possible), a client for their 'collaboration server' on emacs could be interesting: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/docs/src/development/local-collaboration.md [External Link]

-- in other news, emacs 30.1 is just around the corner (the NEWS file has an entry for it, though the build still says 30.0.60).

Popular multiplayer code editor Zed gets a Linux release

Quoting: akselmoHaving tried it, it was pretty slow compared to other editors I've used. The fonts are also quite blurry, it's full of AI stuff , it looks like Mac app even on Linux, has some weird Mac keyboard symbols for shortcuts, there's no debugger support...

I know it's just first release on Linux and I hope it gets better, but for now I saw no reason to use it over Kate or Helix.

You can luckily toggle off the AI bullshit from the settings but it being plastered everywhere really tells me who the audience is, and I don't think it's me. Also they seemed to equate Git with Github, because only Github services were supported.

On positive side though, it was very easy to get going with it and the config, while being editing json files (why??), was still alright experience.

Edit: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12589 [External Link] oh no
I got curious & installed it (Arch already has it in the official Extra repo.). My first impressions are pretty much the same.

... not that I'll investigate it any further, but the open project dialog doesn't even show up on my Xfce setup, & the UI gives no clue as to how I could open a file. Drag-drop doesn't work either. So, yeah, I haven't been able to open a file on this thing. The entirely baseless joke about 'exiting vim' can be replaced by 'opening a file in zed' now, I guess -- and it would have a material basis this time around.

Edit: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12589 [External Link] oh no
-- and their reasoning for doing it this way is ridiculous. If this is a text editor for programmers, maybe it doesn't have to have a 100% no-config ootb experience for all of its functionality; it's not a general-purpose todo app.

Really looking forward to trying out the window manager on this.

Quoting: tohurman IMO cosmic looks uuugly af.. no amount of theming gona help it either as it isn't just cosmic but every GUI rust app I have ever seen looks uuugly
Oh wow, such an insightful comment. What about Rust do you think makes its GUIs ugly? Could it be the borrow checker? Maybe it doesn't let the widgets borrow any beautifulness, so they're left with their uuugliness.

DOOM: The Dark Ages announced for Steam in 2025

I loved both 2016 & Eternal; & I'm sure this will be a hugely fun game -- but I honestly am put off by the in-your-face unignorable fantasy theming they slapped on this.

One suspicion is that since Doom is currently a well-resurrected (!) money-maker of a franchise/'ip', MS/Bethesda won't even let id experiment with another 'ip', or a Quake (Quake I, of course) reboot.

Though that might not be the only factor, because Hugo Martin seems to have been determined to cram as much 'thematic stuff' into Doom as possible right from the start. They were simply being cautious in 2016 with the background story & lore -- and ironically, critics at the time praised this 'fresh new direction' ('See how Doomguy tossed away the exposition screen in the beginning! That just signals that id themselves are tossing away convoluted narratives and exposition dumps!!!' ... little did they know).

So then even more nuke happy than the class collaborationist Gandhi? lol
I mean, since 1993, the computer 'players' don't actually *play* the game in Civilization, they *spam* buildings and units at no penalty -- and 'difficulty level' is just a measure of how fast they spam. Which, I guess, is fitting, because the *human player* is expected to do similar: Keep consuming resources to spam stuff, and he who consumes most, to spam most, wins at the end.

So it isn't really a fun little sandbox to write yourself an alternate history ... unless ALL you understand by 'alternate history' is a history of who has spammed most stuff.

It's probably not a coincidence, that building the stock market later on in the game has always contributed to the overall happiness score of your civilization, and since Civ II, the player is able to divert all surplus 'production' into 'capitalization' for infinite wealth.

... and diplomacy & geopolitical resource management after Civ III was supposed to help players get some sort of grip on other civilizations' reasons for liking or disliking each other ... except there's always some weird coefficient that somehow multiplies all the relevant numbers, and anyone can turn against anyone else for no reason whatsoever.

God of War Ragnarok and Until Dawn coming to Steam, requires PlayStation Network Account

Quoting: Cylis_DragneelDid they not learn from the backlash when they did this to Helldivers?
They did; the lesson was not to do a brazen bait-and-switch again -- which is why they're announcing the PSN requirement upfront this time around.

'letting people choose' -- sure, on the basis of information that's relevant to their needs & concerns. Which is what articles like this are trying to help with.
