Really looking forward to trying out the window manager on this.

Quoting: tohurman IMO cosmic looks uuugly af.. no amount of theming gona help it either as it isn't just cosmic but every GUI rust app I have ever seen looks uuugly
Oh wow, such an insightful comment. What about Rust do you think makes its GUIs ugly? Could it be the borrow checker? Maybe it doesn't let the widgets borrow any beautifulness, so they're left with their uuugliness.

DOOM: The Dark Ages announced for Steam in 2025

I loved both 2016 & Eternal; & I'm sure this will be a hugely fun game -- but I honestly am put off by the in-your-face unignorable fantasy theming they slapped on this.

One suspicion is that since Doom is currently a well-resurrected (!) money-maker of a franchise/'ip', MS/Bethesda won't even let id experiment with another 'ip', or a Quake (Quake I, of course) reboot.

Though that might not be the only factor, because Hugo Martin seems to have been determined to cram as much 'thematic stuff' into Doom as possible right from the start. They were simply being cautious in 2016 with the background story & lore -- and ironically, critics at the time praised this 'fresh new direction' ('See how Doomguy tossed away the exposition screen in the beginning! That just signals that id themselves are tossing away convoluted narratives and exposition dumps!!!' ... little did they know).

So then even more nuke happy than the class collaborationist Gandhi? lol
I mean, since 1993, the computer 'players' don't actually *play* the game in Civilization, they *spam* buildings and units at no penalty -- and 'difficulty level' is just a measure of how fast they spam. Which, I guess, is fitting, because the *human player* is expected to do similar: Keep consuming resources to spam stuff, and he who consumes most, to spam most, wins at the end.

So it isn't really a fun little sandbox to write yourself an alternate history ... unless ALL you understand by 'alternate history' is a history of who has spammed most stuff.

It's probably not a coincidence, that building the stock market later on in the game has always contributed to the overall happiness score of your civilization, and since Civ II, the player is able to divert all surplus 'production' into 'capitalization' for infinite wealth.

... and diplomacy & geopolitical resource management after Civ III was supposed to help players get some sort of grip on other civilizations' reasons for liking or disliking each other ... except there's always some weird coefficient that somehow multiplies all the relevant numbers, and anyone can turn against anyone else for no reason whatsoever.

God of War Ragnarok and Until Dawn coming to Steam, requires PlayStation Network Account

Quoting: Cylis_DragneelDid they not learn from the backlash when they did this to Helldivers?
They did; the lesson was not to do a brazen bait-and-switch again -- which is why they're announcing the PSN requirement upfront this time around.

'letting people choose' -- sure, on the basis of information that's relevant to their needs & concerns. Which is what articles like this are trying to help with.

... so I take it that plaintext indexing & search already works flawlessly on windows, that they're now expanding their horizons to indexing images, & user actions and the like?

... and that the promised indices won't take up half of the user's boot drive, and perpetually occupy half of their cpu & ram? (which of course they won't because all the processing and storage will be 'in the cloud')

Sony gives up on forcing PlayStation Network for Helldivers 2
6 May 2024 at 7:44 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: EagleDeltaI think we need to be careful here. During this mess Sony blocked over 170 countries from buying the game that contained users that already could buy the game. As part of this they have NOT reinstated sales in those territories. As some game devs, users, and streamers have noted - this is not "won" unless that is also undone.

Why? Because they can just bide time and try to enforce the login again, just this time without the bite of the pushback relating to users losing access as "those countries can't buy the game now".
Which is an indication that data gathering & surveillance is more important to them than sales ... which is supremely odd, since Sony is not an ad broker & influence peddler like Google.

Flathub for Linux apps has been given quite the makeover
24 Apr 2024 at 3:28 pm UTC Likes: 7

Quoting: Purple Library GuySo, I've never really used flatpaks, except maybe one or two that were actually in my distro's repository. So I'm wondering--If you install stuff from Flathub, how do you keep it up to date? Is there some mechanism or do you just have to sort of remember that you ought to, application by application? Do you update, or do you just reinstall a newer version?
On the cli, it comes with a package manager of sorts; otherwise it integrates with gui managers like KDE Discover, or GNOME Software via packagekit transparently. I use `flatpak update` on the cli, whenever I check for stuff on the regular package manager.

One thing that does require a bit of manual tinkering is the permissions; there's an app called Flatseal that makes it a lot easier: https://flathub.org/apps/com.github.tchx84.Flatseal [External Link]; KDE system settings also has a tab nowadays towards the same end.
