Quoting: GuestSounds like bad news as all the app developers will transition to flatpak and paid services. There will be few free FOSS developers left and this will likely leave distro repositories empty. I'd also expect that the open source movement will die as app developers seek to protect their revenue and close their code so they can continue making money.

Overall I think this is bad news for linux
If application developers wanted to make money, they would've created applications for systems where they could actually make some money. These days it's so simple to create cross platform applications (and monetize them) but people still create Free Linux/GNOME/KDE/<INSERT YOUR PREFERRED DE PROJECT> applications because they want to. Nothing is going to change.

Wine 8.2 rolls out along with a new Proton Experimental update

Quoting: dziadulewiczThere is no flatpak or a snap for Wine either (if there was, users could run Wine happily in a sandbox without any fear?)
There is a Wine Flatpak (org.winehq.Wine, not visible in Flathub since it's not a GUI tool). Both Lutris & Bottles are based on & should provide access to it.

Quoting: ElectricPrismMaybe someone could think of any other corporate for-profit company that does this? Maybe it's just me, but I can't off the top of my head.
Microsoft allows this (even for Windows updates).

Quoting: dziadulewiczNaw naw, not complaining really. […] But you do you, i do me. Peace
You're joking, right? You are explicitly going into a GOG exclusive news just to whine. You don't contribute one bit to a constructive discussion.

Do as you say & just stay away from, to you, irrelevant information, nobody cares about your opinion!

It's always great to see, how "open" the gaming community is.

Quoting: TermyWhy the fuck would you want 4k on a 16" screen? Especially as fractional scaling isn't exactly issue-free yet either...
There's your answer: 4K is 1080p, but any higher or lower resolution should work, too.

With 2560x1600 you're forced to use fractional scaling at a "relative" low resolution (e.g. Apple is closer to 4K, too).

Does it say anywhere if they're using the Ryzen 6000-series?

Valve filed a 'computer game software' trademark for 'NEON PRIME' (updated)

I believe it can't be any kind of service because Amazon would block the trademark.

Besides: Any service would definitely contain "Steam" in its name.

Quoting: GuestSince all the tests have been done in this VM, it seems strange to me that this would be the explanation. Flatpak didn't have the same impact so it was probably just Snap being slow.
I leave it up to you to philosophize about what could go wrong if the driver is missing & why the driver could be missing in one case.

To be clear: I don't give a rats ass about snap and I believe there are valid points (closed source etc.) against it (but I'm just not using Ubuntu or Ubuntu based distributions). But the benchmark looks simply wrong. Even if there is something which degrades the graphics performance in the snap (a bug, a wrong configuration), any unbiased person would question these results or at least mention it.

With that being said: I'm out, have fun with your operating system but leave out the FUD from your arguments.

Quoting: GuestThe article on cstan.io was written on December 1, 2021. Are you going to claim that these kinds of problems are all magically solved in a few months? According to his benchmark, the snap performed 6,175 times slower in MotionMark.
As an example application, Firefox 94.x was started in an Ubuntu 21.10 VM with 2 CPUs and 2 GB RAM and tested via BrowserBench.org. VirtualBox 6.1 and an Intel i7-8850H CPU were used on the host side.
Translation by DeepL, emphasis by me: Doesn't VirtualBox require a specific driver to allow some kind of hardware acceleration?
