Anti-cheat will still be one of the biggest problems for the new Steam Machine

Sounds pretty extreme, but actually ...
if you design client-authoritative protocols today and then try to patch it by infesting the client with rootkits and Trojans, yeah, you shouldn't be on any store front.

Quoting: Super-GValve sabotages its own efforts by continuing on its noncommittal way of handing publishers. If they want their devices to succeed, it is long overdue that they demand of publishers that their titles will either run on the Steam Deck and Steam Machine or are kicked off the marketplace.

That would put an end to kernel-level anti-cheat in no time, which is bad anyway. The only reason why anti-cheat systems are needed at all, is because developers failed to build zero-trust into their client/server model in the first place. Take wall-hacks for example: Those are only possible because the client knows the opponents are there. But if they aren't visible, the server doesn't have to send that information to the client in the first place. Fly and speed hacks only work because the server fails at movement checking. If anti-cheat would be considered throughout development, client-side anti-cheat would simply be unnecessary. Everywhere else in IT it is considered a given that you can not trust a client. Only game developers try to protect their clients instead of securing the server endpoints.

Client-side anti-cheat is nothing more than a vector for deployment of back-doors and root-kits.
Furthermore, client-side anti-cheat is nothing more than a pointless placebo that can never, ever, prevent cheating.

Game store itch.io has "deindexed" adult content due to payment processor scrutiny

How is this even legal? Payment processors provide an essential service, they should have zero say on what they're customers can purchase as long as it isn't illegal - in which case it would be a an issue for law enforcement and not them.

Random companies being able to decide on what content is acceptable across all platforms is just plain lunacy.

Valve gives SteamVR and Linux a little love in the latest update

Quoting: ikirutoHow cool would it be to see "Oculus Quest 2 support added". :)
Facebook hardware is subsidized by user data and their walled garden. Not going to happen.

Valve gives SteamVR and Linux a little love in the latest update

Quoting: pbI totally expect a standalone VR device from Valve, based on their experiences with Index and Deck, powered by SteamOS.
Still waiting for the wireless Index adapter :/
IMHO standalone is just not there yet regarding hardware capabilities (Unless you enjoy retro graphics and 'experiences' instead of proper games).

KDE developer suggests Plasma needs to be simpler by default
30 Nov 2021 at 8:12 pm UTC

KDE has already been dumbed down.
I was a huge KDE3 fan, but KDE4 replaced all the great and useful features with pointless eyecandy, bad performance and instability while being an unreasonable resource hog.
So for me it already lost all its appeal and I switched to to something better performing.

SteamVR Overlay not working on Arch or Manjaro Linux? Here's a fix

The easy workaround on arch is to install steam-native-runtime and run steam-native instead of steam.

Quoting: CatKillerDo quad controllers (until the Deck is released) generally have gyro?
If you mean RC transmitters: no.
Some toy/DJI video drones do support gyro controls via mobile phone, but there is absolutely zero relation to race quads.
Those toy/video drones use autolevel mode.
Race/Freestyle pilots fly manual (aka acro/air mode) in order to be able to perform the maneuvers because it's impossible in autolevel mode.
You'd need 2 gyro controllers or use a stick+gyro because you manually control thrust+yaw+pitch+roll in acro mode.
I just gave it a try with a steam controller, gyro for pitch+roll, stick for thrust+yaw. Absolutely zero chance I'd be able to pull it off ^^

Quoting: PhiladelphusInteresting, I've been contemplating FPV drones recently, but can't quite afford a new hobby for a few months and everything I've seen says to get as much time as possible in on a simulator first. Hadn't heard of this studio before, but maybe this would be a cheaper way to find out if I'm actually interested in FPV flying.
Yeah, if you manage to learn acro mode in Liftoff you're good to fly the real thing.
It is an an expensive hobby but fun and addictive. The initial costs for FPV goggles+TX are steep.
If the quads are expensive depends if you go analog or DJI.
You do also need at least basic electronics equipment (soldering station, multi-meter) and quite a lot of reading.

I wonder why this isn't simply a Liftoff DLC.

Quoting: CatKillerI hope they'll implement robust support for gyro controls.
Uhm, IDK, I consider Liftoff a sim. I use it for training and I don't think I'll even attempt fly a race quad with gyro _ever_. If somebody manages to fly in acro/airmode with gyro - respect.
Are there people playing this without owning a quadcopter?
